Packers vs Vikings NFL Week 12 Odds & Pick for Sunday Night

Written by on November 23, 2018

It’s the second game in a row on prime time for both the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings this Sunday night. The last outing didn’t go so well for either as the Packers fell last Thursday in Seattle and the Vikings lost last Sunday night in Chicago. The Vikes are just over field-goal NFL betting favorites here.

Last Meeting

These teams had an unlikely 29-29 tie in Week 2 in which both clubs blew golden chances to win. The Vikings rallied from 13 down in the fourth – aided by a terrible penalty call on Green Bay’s Clay Matthews – but Daniel Carlson missed two field goals in overtime, including one from 35 yards as time expired. He’s gone now. Packers kicker Mason Crosby matched a career high with five field goals, but his potential game-winner from 52 went wide left as time expired in regulation. Aaron Rodgers threw for 281 yards and a TD, while Kirk Cousins threw for 425 and four scores.

The Vikings and Packers have played 116 times overall. Green Bay holds the series lead with a 60-53-3 record. The Packers are the Vikings most frequent opponent in franchise history.

Why Bet on Green Bay?

The Packers lost 27-24 last Thursday in Seattle. Aaron Rodgers completed 21-of-30 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns. Rodgers played a perfect first half but the Packers fell apart after the break. Davante Adams caught 10-of-12 targets for 166 yards, which were a career high. With six games to go, Adams is now just 47 yards shy of his first 1,000-yard campaign. Aaron Jones rushed 11 times for 40 yards and a touchdown in the Packers’ Week 11 loss to the Seahawks, adding five receptions for 63 yards and an additional score. The second-year pro now has four scores over his past two games.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said tight end Jimmy Graham will test out his injured thumb during Friday’s practice. Graham wants to play through his broken thumb, but to do so he will need to be able to block and catch. McCarthy said Graham has an “attachment” for his cast he will test out to see if he can do those things. WR Jake Kumerow returned to practice on Wednesday. Kumerow was placed on I.R. with a shoulder injury prior to Week 1. A preseason standout this summer, Kumerow could be activated for Sunday’s game in Minnesota.

The Packers have scored 22-plus points in eight of 10 games played this season, tied for the fifth-most in the NFL. Green Bay has scored 23-plus points in eight of their last nine road games they have played in the month of November.

Rodgers has thrown 26 touchdowns against zero interceptions for a 115.6 passer rating in his past 10 games against the NFC North. Rodgers needs three touchdown passes without an interception to have the most consecutive touchdowns without an interception by a player against any division since 2002.

Of the past 32 regular-season meetings between these teams, 21 of those games have been decided by seven points or less, including a tie in the first meeting this season in Week 2.

Why Bet on Minnesota?

The Vikings were 25-20 losers in Chicago last Sunday, and with the Bears winning again Thursday the NFC North race is all but over if Minnesota loses here.

Kirk Cousins completed 30-of-46 passes for 262 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions in the loss. Cousins had just 57 yards and an interception at halftime but salvaged his night with a touchdown on the final drive. One of Cousins’ interceptions was a late fourth quarter pick-six that crushed the Vikings’ comeback attempt.

Packers vs Vikings is going to be a tough test for Kirk Cousins.

Stefon Diggs caught 13-of-18 targets for 126 yards and a touchdown. With Adam Thielen getting held in check out of the slot, Cousins was locked on to Diggs for most of the night. Diggs got the majority of his yards after the catch.

Thielen is on a record-breaking pace. His 85 receptions lead the NFL entering Week 12 and are the third-most in NFL history through the first 10 games of a season. Thielen’s 1,013 receiving yards rank fourth in the NFL, and his seven receiving touchdowns are tied for seventh. Thielen and Diggs, who ranks sixth in the NFL with 71 receptions, are the only WR duo in the NFL to rank in the top 10 in catches this season. The 198 receptions and 17 receiving touchdowns by Vikings receivers lead all NFL position groups.

Vikings LB Anthony Barr (hamstring) expects to return for Week 12. The starting linebacker has missed the past three games. Despite missing multiple starters through the first 10 games, the Vikings defense has allowed 320.8 yards per game, the fifth-lowest average in the NFL. Vikings DE Danielle Hunter, who is second in the NFL with 11.5 sacks, set a new single-game career high with 3.5 sacks vs. Detroit in Week 9, powering the defense to a team record 10 sacks against the Lions.

The Vikings have allowed only four runs of 15 or more yards in 2018, the fewest in the NFL. The Vikings defense has held opponents to a third-down conversion rate of 28.3 percent, the best in the NFL.
