The Skins were pounded 38-14 at home by Atlanta on Sunday. Matt Ryan torched the Skins, completing 26 of 38 passes for 350 yards and four touchdowns. Alex Smith completed 30-of-46 passes for 306 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Redskins fell behind the Falcons and couldn’t stop the run, so Smith dropped back to pass 49 times with three sacks taken. Adrian Peterson managed 17 yards on nine carries and caught 3-of-3 targets for 16 yards. Peterson’s best run of the game was negated by a penalty. The Skins were destroyed by injuries in the game. The team has placed WR Paul Richardson on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, ending his season. Richardson needs surgery to repair an injured AC joint. Tony Bergstrom will slide into one of the starting spots. The other is TBD. The team also signed OG Jonathan Cooper and C Luke Bowanko. Both have starting experience in the league. Cooper is a failed former first-round pick who got cut by San Francisco toward the end of training camp. Coach Dirk Koetter confirmed Fitzpatrick remains his starter: “Ryan had one [bad play] there in the first half — an overthrow on that one interception that we’d like to have back — but did a good job of leading us back.”
Tampa’s defense is the worst in the NFL. The Buccaneers have not been able to fully capitalize on the most explosive offense in team history, though that is also due to the offense’s own issue with giveaways. Tampa Bay’s defense created five turnovers during the first two games plus the first quarter of game three. In the 23 quarters of play since that defense has not come up with a single takeaway; the only turnover by the Bucs’ opposition since has been a fumbled punt return in overtime against Cleveland.
