Why Bet on Washington?

The Redskins (4-3) had a four-game winning streak end last week in a 20-17 loss in Detroit on a Matthew Stafford touchdown pass with 16 seconds left. Kirk Cousins scored a go-ahead TD on a 19-yard run with 1:05 left. The Redskins, though, failed to stop Stafford from throwing or running on his last possession and could not overcome mistakes that included turnovers, a missed field goal and penalties. Cousins finished 30 of 39 for 301 yards with a TD and a fumble. Over his past five starts, Cousins has a 99.2 passer rating and a 4-1 record. Redskins wide receiver Jamison Crowder had seven catches for 108 yards last week, his second career 100-yard receiving game. Crowder has scored a career-best four touchdowns this season (three receiving, one punt return). The Redskins were without standout tight end Jordan Reed for a second straight game because of a concussion. Reed will visit an independent doctor Thursday to see if he can be cleared to play Week 8 against the Bengals. It’s looking good for him. Washington’s Josh Norman, one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks, was knocked out of the game with a concussion, landing hard on his left shoulder after giving up a 52-yard pass to Marvin Jones in the third quarter. Norman probably won’t be cleared in time. Also in question is left tackle Trent Williams. Williams went down with a left knee sprain on the second-to- last play of the game, a situation that could’ve been avoided had the defense held Detroit out of the end zone on its final drive. The four-time Pro Bowl honoree needed to be helped off the field. An MRI was negative.

Why Bet on Cincinnati?

The Bengals will go against their former offensive coordinator in Washington coach Jay Gruden. He was the Cincinnati OC from 2011-13 before getting the Redskins’ top job. Cincinnati trashed winless Cleveland 31-17 last week to end a two-game losing streak. The defending AFC North champions piled up their most points since they beat the Browns 37-3 last December. Jeremy Hill had a 74-yard touchdown run as part of his 168-yard effort, the best by a Bengals running back in seven years. After failing to score more than 23 points in any of the first six games, the Bengals finally got rolling against one of the league’s worst defenses, piling up 559 yards — their most ince 1990. Hill’s 168 rushing yards are the third-most in NFL history by a player with fewer than 10 carries in a game. Receiver A.J. Green had eight catches for 169 yards and a touchdown (48 yards) in the victory. It marked Green’s ninth career game with at least 150 receiving yards and a touchdown catch, which is the fourth-most in NFL history by a player in his first six seasons. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis expects Pro Bowl tight end Tyler Eifert’s (ankle) role to expand for Week 8. Eifert was limited to 15 snaps in his 2016 debut vs. Cleveland, but avoided setbacks. The Bengals also expect left tackle Whitworth (concussion) to be cleared for Sunday’s game against the Redskins. Whitworth has missed only two games in his 11-year career.
