Group B is home to a pair of huge nations, and barring an upset, they should both move on from this section. 2018 World Cup Betting Preview: Group B

Here are the 4 teams playing in Group B:
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Morocco
  • Iran
Let’s take a closer look at how Group B might play out at the World Cup.

Portugal

The current champions of Europe will now be taking their game to an even bigger stage, with hopes of adding the World Cup to their 2016 European Championships win. If they are to pull it off, they are going to need to rely on Cristiano Ronaldo, as they always do. Portugal lost their opening game in qualifying but followed that up with 9 straight wins, where they scored 32 and gave up just 2. It was Ronaldo and Andres Silva who accounted for 24 of the goals during that run. If Ronaldo stays healthy, Portugal is a decent bet to make a deep run. Spain The Spaniards come into this World Cup with a number of players who have already hoisted this trophy in the past. Spain plays a possession game that allows them to control most games from start to finish. If they have a weakness, it’s that they don’t always turn that possession into goals. Yes, they scored 36 in qualifying, but they also feasted on a couple of poor teams. They have a pair of good strikers in Diego Costa and Alvaro Morata, but neither was in great form in the domestic game this season. Defensively, Spain is sound, and in David de Gea, they have the best goalkeeper in the world.

Morocco

There is almost no chance that this team moves on to the next round of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but they are going to be a tough team to break down. They went unbeaten in all 6 games in their final qualifying group, failing to concede a single goal during that run. That said, they failed to score during the first 3 games in that group. They did light things up when it mattered, but you wonder how they are going to find goals against teams of the quality of Portugal and Spain. Their best bet of getting anything out of this group will come against Iran.

Iran

It would be easy to write this team off, but let’s not forget that they qualified for the World Cup in a relative stroll, and were the second team, after Brazil, to book their spot. Iran comes in as the 2018 World Cup Betting underdog at Group B. It was the defense that got all the acclaim in their 10-game unbeaten run in qualifying, as they did not give up a goal until the final game in that stage, long after they had booked their ticket. Iran has a deep squad with some talent at every position, but they are in a little too deep in this group.
