Italy has been one of the top teams in the Under-20 World Cup, though. The Italians are likely to beat Poland on Sunday. The odds aren’t bad either. It’s rare to get above even money odds on a solid squad like the Italian side.

Colombia vs New Zealand

New Zealand finished with 6 points in Group C. That’s why they get a chance to take down one of the top squads from South America, Colombia, on Sunday. Colombia couldn’t catch Senegal in Group A. They only lost the group by a single point, 7 to 6. Colombia’s youth soccer program is as good as any in South America. It’s right up there with Argentina’s. New Zealand is more of a rugby, cricket nation. Colombia should win easily.

Uruguay vs Ecuador

Uruguay dominated Group C with 9 points. They not only went 3-0, but they outscored New Zealand, Norway, and Honduras 7-1. The Uruguayans most definitely deserve to be favored in their Monday match with Ecuador. The issue arises when we consider whom Uruguay beat.

Norway, Honduras, and New Zealand don’t stand up to whom Ecuador played in Group B. Italy, Japan, and Mexico are much stronger teams. Ecuador can eliminate Uruguay on June 3. Pick: Ecuador

Ukraine vs Panama

Ukraine won Group D with 7 points. Group D was one of the deeper groups in the Under-20 World Cup. Along with the Ukraine, Nigeria and the United States came out of Group D. Panama finished in third place in Group E behind Mali and France. Panama and Mali had the same 4 points. Mali got the nod for second place because they scored 7 goals while Panama only scored 3. The Panamanians are the epitome of a true underdog. The Ukraine should beat Panama by 2 to 3 goals in this. If you don’t like the moneyline odds, the handicap has the Ukraine at -1, -101. Senegal vs Nigeria

This could be the most interesting match up in the Round of 16. Senegal, the much smaller African nation, won Group A with a resounding 7 points. Group A not only included host nation Poland, it also included Colombia. Senegal earned their spot in the Round of 16.

So did Nigeria. The Nigerians battled Group D winner the Ukraine as well as top youth soccer nation the United States. Nigeria has a real shot to upset Senegal in regulation on Monday. More than likely, this finishes in a draw before going into extra time and then, possibly, a shootout.

Japan vs Republic of Korea

On Tuesday, two of the top soccer programs in Asia battle it out on the pitch. Japan finished second behind Italy in Group B with 5 points. South Korea finished tied with Argentina in Group F with 6 points. Argentina got the nod for the group victory because they scored 8 goals and gave up 4 while South Korea scored 3 and gave up 2. Japan is slightly favored. They probably shouldn’t be. Their rivals on Tuesday played in a deep group. Portugal finished third in Group F. South Korea can upset Japan. Pick: Republic of Korea

France vs USA

France dominated Group E with 9 points. They went 3-0. They outscored their opponents a combined 7-2. The United States finished second in Group D with 6 points. USA scored 4 and allowed 2. They finished two points ahead of Nigeria and a point behind the Ukraine. Group D was deeper than Group E, no doubt. But, France is a soccer juggernaut. The USA doesn’t have the same soccer prowess that the French possess. France should dominate the Americans on Tuesday. Pick: France

Argentina vs Mali

Argentina ended up with 6 points in Group F just like South Korea. The main difference is that Argentina scored 8 goals while South Korea scored only 3. Argentina’s rival on Tuesday, Mali, finished second in Group E. Mali is a high-scoring squad. They kicked 7 balls into the back of the net during group play. They also allowed 7 goals, though. That gives Argentina a major edge here. The Argentinians like to play fast and loose, but their defense is much tighter than Mali’s. Argentina wins and moves on. Pick: Argentina
