When you are coming off a UFC weekend that had 3 title fights on the main card, you expect there to be lots of news to report. That is certainly the case, as we saw some explosive action at UFC 261. That has to be great news for the fans who were in attendance live for the first time in months, as well as for those who coughed up money to watch the PPV. There is a lot to unpack after what was a wild night of MMA action, plus we have some other little news nuggets that are making some headlines today. With that in mind, let’s dive in right away so you can continue betting against their UFC odds.
2021 MMA Betting News & Rumors Update | Apr. 26th Edition
If there was a disappointing moment to be found on Saturday night, it had to be in the headline event, where Kamaru Usman successfully defended his title against Jorge Masvidal. A lot was expected of this rematch given that their previous meeting went the distance even after Masvidal took the fight on short notice. Anyone expecting another 5-round fight were quickly left disappointed, with the champ getting the job done in the second round. We do have a fighter now potentially throwing their hat in the ring as the next contender for Usman.
That fighter would be Conor McGregor, who had a lot to say on social media after taking in Saturday night’s action. The Irishman suggested that Usman was stealing his KO punching style, and then went on to say that he might consider moving up to 170 pounds to take on the champ. It may be just the bluster that we are used to seeing from McGregor, but now that the idea is out in the world, you know that fight fans are going to want to see it. Before any of that can happen, though, McGregor still needs to have his rematch against Dustin Poirier.
In the other title fights, we one expected win and one surprise. Valentina Shevchenko had already established herself as the best in her division, but after her 5th straight title defense, you have to wonder who can beat her. The winner of the upcoming Calderwood/Murphey fight would appear to be the most obvious, but there are plenty who are calling for a 3rd fight with Amanda Nunes. On the surprising side of things, Rose Namajunas made short work of Zhang Weili to steal the Strawweight belt. It wasn’t just surprising that she won, but also how quickly she made it happen.
Now for some quick news snippets – Word out of the Chris Weidman camp is that the fighter is doing well after a gruesome leg injury on Saturday night that was tough to watch. A Conor McGregor impersonator will be spending a few years in jail after being caught dealing drugs. Jake Paul took time to call out Dana White on how much UFC fighters are currently paid, but White seems to want no part of anything Paul says or does, stating that there is zero chance he would ever get into business with the YouTube star.
