Top Potential Mike Tyson Opponents on May 29
- Evander Holyfield
Holyfield versus Iron Mike makes the most sense, right? But breaking news came out on March 22 that could throw a huge wrench into the plans. Before getting into the news, let’s discuss the history between these two.
Holyfield and Tyson were supposed to fight early on in Mike’s career. Mike had to spend about a year in jail. Once Tyson got out, he won the world title and then signed a deal to fight Holyfield.
Tyson fought well early on in the bout. Evander got the best of Mike in the later rounds, stopping Iron Mike via technical knockout in the eleventh.
Everyone knows what happened in the rematch. Tyson bit a chunk out of Holyfield’s ear in the third-round. Referee Mills Lane disqualified Iron Mike and awarded Evander the win.
Supposedly, Tyson and Holyfield had been discussing a third-bout for months. But this past Monday, Evander said Mike declined $25 million to fight Holyfield on Memorial Day Weekend. Right now, it doesn’t appear as if Holyfield is Mike Tyson’s next opponent.
- Lennox Lewis
Mike Tyson didn’t fight Lennox Lewis until 2002. By then, Iron Mike was a shell of the former Baddest Man on the Planet.
For the first seven rounds, Lewis toyed with Mike. Then in the eighth, Lennox ended Mike’s night with a knockout victory.
Lennox, no doubt, has kept himself in shape. Although a year older than Tyson, Lewis’ body hasn’t suffered the same damage that Iron Mike’s has. Tyson could fight Lennox. More than likely, he’ll turn down the bout because Lewis has physical advantages that will be hard for Tyson to overcome.
- Riddick Bowe
If Riddick Bowe had kept it together, he may have gone down as one of the greatest boxers of all time. Bowe had problems with his weight throughout his career.
He beat Evander Holyfield in 2 of their 3 bouts and stopped boxing with a 43-1-1 record. The no contest happened against Buster Mathis Jr.
It’s a shame that Bowe and Tyson didn’t fight during their primes. Bowe is 6’ 5”, which means he would have used his jab to keep Mike at bay while trying to put together long combinations. To counter the strategy, Mike would have moved forward and cut the distance between Riddick and himself.
Bowe didn’t just box. He tried a kickboxing career and a pro wrestling career. He also joined the Marines for a bit. A man of many talents, Riddick would make for an excellent second-bout opponent.
Bowe is 53-years-old, a year younger than Mike, and, no doubt, would be willing to step into the ring for a nice payday.
- James Toney
Like Riddick Bowe, James Toney would be a great opponent for Mike Tyson. Toney believes he’s Tyson’s choice.
On March 22, after hearing that Tyson was going to fight on May 29, Toney posted a video of Mike doing a strange dance. James wrote, “You better not wear a mini-skirt to our fight.”
Toney is one of the smartest fighters to ever step into a ring. His boxing knowledge might be better than Tyson’s, and that’s saying a lot. James never trained all that hard for fights, which is why he lost 10 of his 92 bouts.
Yes, that’s correct. James Toney fought 92 times. He won 47-of-77 bouts via knockout or technical knockout. No matter what shape Tony is in, he’d challenge Iron Mike.
Whether Tyson chooses Bowe, Toney, or someone else as his next opponent, one thing is for sure, Iron Mike will step into a ring at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on May 29.
