Mike Tyson And His Journey To Be Vegan – Boxing Lines

Written by on October 8, 2020

When Iron Mike Tyson steps into the ring for an 8-round exhibition boxing match versus Roy Jones Jr. on Nov. 28, most will wonder whether Tyson has anything left. After all, Iron Mike lived a rough life. At one point, he was homeless. Then, he had to spend 3 years in jail, got into drugs, alcohol, and suffered, like so many fighters before him, while fighting for Don King. With that being said, let’s have a look at Iron Mike change of diet so you can keep placing your bets against his Mike Tyson Odds for the fight versus Roy Jones Jr.

The Former Baddest Man on the Planet is a Vegan

Now 54, Tyson appears to have put all of that behind him. Like he said to fellow former ring great Sugar Ray Leonard in a podcast in March, “I’m working on being the art of humbleness. That’s the reason I’m crying, ’cause I’m not that person no more, and I miss him. Sometimes I feel like a b**ch because I don’t want that person to come out … ’cause if he comes out hell is coming with him. And, it’s not funny at all. It’s not cool like I’m a tough guy. It’s just that I hate that guy, I’m scared of him.”

Part of Tyson’s humbleness, it turns out, is becoming a vegan. Although that sounds strange, think about it this way, only an act of violence puts meat on the table. One could argue that eating vegetables commits violence towards plants. In most cases, though, as long as the roots of a plant survive, the plant itself survives. That’s why trees and other plants lose leaves during the winter and return to full strength in the spring.

Tyson became a vegan in 2013. One of the reasons had to do with health. By 2009, Iron Mike had hit rock bottom. He was a full-blown cocaine addict. So much so, that he claims to have not known about his The Hangover cameo because he was snorting so much cocaine. Mike claims he heard about the cameo after going to his favorite club and finding fellow The Hangover cast members sitting in his section.

That’s where he met good friend Bradley Cooper. Iron Mike asked them who they were and why they were there. Zach Galifianakis broke the news to Tyson that he was going to be in a move with them and that they were shooting his scene tomorrow.

Maybe, the light bulb went off after that. In any case, Iron Mike decided to change his lifestyle. He told Oprah Winfrey, “I lost weight. I dropped over 100lbs and I just felt like changing my life, doing something different and I became a vegan.”

Per the Vegan Society, veganism in terms of diet hopes to “denote the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.” By becoming a vegan in the dietary sense, the former Baddest Man on the Planet lost one-hundred pounds.

Some of Mike’s friends say he’s in the best shape of his life. If he is, Roy Jones Jr. had better watch out. Few boxers perfected a specific style the way Iron Mike did. Tyson is a peek-a-boo boxing style craftsman, so Roy had better be in great shape on Nov. 28.
