2018 NCAA Football Week 12 Betting Picks

Miami at Virginia Tech

The Miami Hurricanes got back on the national map in a big way in 2017 by going 10-3 and winning the ACC Coastal division crown. The Canes were in line for a good shot at a berth in the four-team CFP late in the season before suffering a trio of costly losses. Still there’s a lot of hope for Miami moving forward under head coach Mark Richt. The biggest decision the Hurricanes head coach has to make is at quarterback where 2017 starter Malik Rosier is not guaranteed to retain his starting spot unless he can become more accurate and efficient. Richt will go with one of three freshmen in N’Kosi Perry, Cade Weldon or Jarren Williams (true freshman) if Rosier can’t get it done with Perry being the likely choice. Virginia Tech went 9-4 last season to finish one game behind Miami in the  ACC Coastal division under head coach Justin Fuente. The Hokies were up and down a year ago with a bunch of inexperienced players playing a lot, but that just means they’ll be better off for it this coming season. Quarterback Josh Jackson  started 13 games as a freshman in 2017 and threw for 2,991 yards with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He’s the likely candidate to start again in 2018, but Fuente needs to identify some playmakers this coming season to help out his young quarterback. The Hokies had one of the best defenses in the country last year, as they ranked fourth nationally in points allowed at 14.8 per game. Unfortunately, the Hokies lost three starters to the NL draft in linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, defensive tackle Tim Settle and safety Terrell Edmunds. Still, defense doesn’t look like it will be an issue in 2018. I’m going with Virginia Tech to hold it down at home in a huge ACC conference clash. The Hokies and Hurricanes are just about evenly matched and that means the home team is the pick here! NCAA Football Week 12 Pick: Virginia Tech 28 Miami 24

USC at UCLA

Are the UCLA Bruins a safe bet for NCAA Football Week 12? USC managed to go 11-3 last season to win the Pac-12 South division while UCLA posted a far more modest 6-7 mark to finish fourth in the South. The Trojans are going into 2018 with a new starting quarterback with strong-armed star Sam Darnold off to the NFL. UCLA is also going to have a new starter with signal-caller Josh Rosen joining Darnold as a first round pick. USC got the win in this annual Pac-12 pairing a year ago and the Trojans have won three straight in this series. However, USC also needs to replace its leading rusher and wide receiver while UCLA will be far more explosive under former Oregon head coach Chip Kelly. Sure, Kelly flamed out when he took his talents to the NFL, but let’s not forget that he also posted a phenomenal 46-7 mark at Oregon with three conference championships and an appearance in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. I’m feeling like the Bruins are going to get the win in this one, because of the addition Kelly. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Matt Fink is the only passer on the USC roster that has appeared in a college game and that just doesn’t bode well for the Trojans. NCAA Football Week 12 Pick: UCLA 31 USC 24 Arizona at Washington State Not only did the Arizona Wildcats go a respectable 7-6 in the Pac-12 a year ago, but more importantly, they found out they have a flat-out superstar in dual-threat quarterback Khalil Tate. Along the way, the Wildcats beat UCLA for the first time since 2011, blew out a top 15-ranked Washington State squad and reached the top 25 for the first time since 2014. Now, as they get set for the upcoming 2018 campaign, the Wildcats could be even more dangerous under first-year head coach Kevin Sumlin after the team parted ways with former head coach Rich Rodriguez because of allegations of misconduct and a lawsuit filed by a former staff member. If there’s one thing Sumlin can do, it’s coach offense and he’s got a supremely gifted superstar athlete in Tate who set the record for FBS quarterback rushing yards in 2017 with 1,411. Tate is also a capable passer and a definite play-maker. The Cats have a bunch of question marks on defense, but Tate is a preseason All-American and could carry his team to brand new heights in 2018. Washington State went 9-4 last season but they suffered a big blow thanks to the graduation of record-setting QB Luke Falk and now head coach Mike Leach needs to identify his replacement in the worst way in order to make his high-powered offense go. Gardner Minshew, a grad transfer from East Carolina is looking like the leader to get the job, but that’s not all. Leach also ha question marks on defense, due to the loss of dominating lineman Hercules Mata’afa and, more importantly, defensive coordinator Alex Grinch who turned the program’s defense completely around in his three years at the school. Washington might be playing at home in this Week 12 Pac-12 pairing, but Khalil Tate give the Wildcats a huge edge and when combined with the fact that Washington will have a first-time starter at quarterback, I see Arizona winning outright. NCAA Football Week 12 Pick: Arizona 38 Washington State 31
