It’s a rare Friday night game for No. 2 Clemson as the Tigers face a potential trap at high-powered Syracuse in an ACC matchup. It’s possible Clemson is looking past the Orange a bit and to next week’s bye. But the Tigers are still NCAAF odds favorites, with Clemson as a three-TD betting favorite for Week 7.

Why Bet On Clemson?

The Tigers (6-0) nearly were caught in a trap last week in a 28-14 win over Wake Forest. Clemson shut out Wake Forest for three quarters on Saturday, but the Demon Deacons scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter after the Tigers built a 28-0 lead. Wake Forest’s touchdowns came against mostly Clemson’s backup defenders. If Kelly Bryant is unable to play against Syracuse or misses time later in the year, Hunter Johnson could be Bryant’s replacement instead of Zerrick Cooper. Johnson was 5-for-5 passing for 42 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cannon Smith. Cooper struggled with his accuracy, completing 2 of 6 passes for 16 yards. Those two battled Bryant for the starting job in camp. Bryant suffered a lower ankle injury in the third quarter against Wake. After the game, Bryant wore a protective boot on his left foot and wouldn’t commit to being ready for this week’s contest. Coach Dabo Swinney said he considered Bryant “day-to-day” but didn’t speculate as to whether the quarterback would need to practice this week to play Friday. Bryant is completing 67 percent of his throws this season, with four passing touchdowns and four interceptions. He also has run for 401 yards and seven touchdowns. Syracuse coach Dino Babers the Tigers’ offense is loaded with speed and playmakers, no matter who starts at quarterback. ”They’re faster than us. If they get out there, we’re not going to catch them. Sorry,” Babers said. ”We can’t let them get out there.”

Why Bet On Syracuse?

It certainly would help if Bryant doesn’t play. The Orange (3-3) come off a 27-24 win over Pitt. Dungey threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to the Homecoming victory. It was the Orange’s first Homecoming win since defeating No. 11 Louisville 45-26 on Nov. 10, 2012, and the victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Syracuse against the Panthers. The Orange reached the 500-yard mark in total offense for the third time in six games this season, outgaining the Panthers, 500-358. Dungey was responsible for 413 of those yards, including 365 through the air. Dungey was 33-of-49 passing. He also ran 12 times for 48 yards. His 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was the 19th of his career, tying the program mark for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback held by Bill Hurley (1975-79) and Donovan McNabb (1995-98). Syracuse linebacker Parris Bennett had a game-best 14 tackles, including nine solo stops. It was the third week in a row Bennett finished with double-digit tackles. He leads the Orange with 56 stops on the season (9.3 per game). Syracuse’s opposition is 1-for-27 (.037) on third down in the first half of games played in the Carrier Dome in 2017. Pittsburgh was 0-for-7 on third down in the opening two quarters. Entering Saturday’s game, the Orange ranked sixth nationally in third-down percentage defense (.250). Pittsburgh was 3-for-13 (.231) on third down, marking the fourth time this season Syracuse held its foe to three third-down conversions or less.
