Why Bet On Navy?

How motivated will Notre Dame be after it was crushed at Miami on Saturday night to see its chances of reaching the College Football Playoff end? And it’s not like Notre Dame has a conference title to play for. Navy (6-3) stopped a three-game losing streak Saturday with a 43-40 home win over SMU to get bowl eligible for the 14^th straight year. Malcolm Perry ran for 282 yards with four touchdowns in his first start at quarterback and backup kicker J.R. Osborn hit an 18-yard game-winning field goal as time expired, Perry was originally recruited as a quarterback, but converted to slotback in the spring. Starting quarterback Zach Abey was active after suffering a shoulder injury the previous week vs. Temple but didn’t play. Perry won National Player of the Week honors. He had touchdown runs of 3, 92, 24 and 1 yard on the day.  The 282 yards rushing is an American Athletic Conference record and the third most in school history. Perry is the only player in the FBS this year to have two runs of 70 or more yards and one reception of 70 or more yards this year and is one of only two players (Denard Robinson of Michigan being the other) to have rushed for 100 or more yards in a game as both a running back and quarterback in the same season. He is the only Navy player in history to have two 90-yard runs in a career. Perry is just the second Navy player to earn the National Player of the Year award since its inception in 2004 joining Shun White, who won it on August 30, 2008. Last year, Navy beat Notre Dame 28-27 in Jacksonville. Will Worth ran for 175 yards and two touchdowns. He’s gone now.  Navy won its fourth game against Notre Dame since 1963. The Irish had won five in a row in the series.

The Irish still have the carrot of playing for a New Year’s Six bowl game. They were blasted 41-8 in Miami, turning the ball over four times – that led to 24 UM points. Notre Dame’s defense, which had scored 109 points off 19 turnovers through nine games, had zero takeaways for the first time this season. Alize Mack caught a 14-yard pass from Brandon Wimbush for the lone touchdown for Notre Dame, which hadn’t played a road game against the Hurricanes since 1989.  After five straight games of at least 318 rushing yards, Notre Dame managed 109 against the Hurricanes. Miami beat Notre Dame in every way: total yards (374-261), first downs (18-13), yards per play (6.0-4.1) and sacks (5-0). The Hurricanes were also 6-6 in the red zone and the Irish were 1-1. The Irish only made it past the 35-yard line once in the second half. “There’s no sense in rehashing what happened out there,” Coach Brian Kelly said to his team in the locker room. “It’s what we do from this point on that matters the most. This is collectively us–we’re all in this together. We’re all part of what happened tonight. We make a decision in here where we go from here. Where do we want to go? The Tigers are off a 33-10 win over Arkansas. LSU scored four second-half touchdowns including three by running back Derrius Guice. The victory was LSU’s 500th at home in school history (500-170-20). LSU got a 147-yard performance from Guice and 130 yards with two touchdown catches from DJ Chark, while outgaining Arkansas, 415-318. Starting for the 20^th straight game, quarterback Danny Etling led the charge for LSU. The senior completed 11-of-16 passes for 217 yards with two touchdowns, now sitting 11th in LSU history with 3,929. Guice carried 21 times with a 7.0 average for his 11th 100-yard game, while senior running back Darrel Williams added 43 yards on nine carries. Etling is currently 11th all‐time in LSU career passing yards. He has 3,929 yards at LSU and needs 23 yards to pass Josh Booty who had 3,951 (1999‐2000) When scoring 20 points in a game, the Tigers are now 22‐1 dating back to the 2015 season.  Dating back to the start of last year’s Alabama game, LSU’s defense, under the direction of Dave Aranda, has limited opponents to only 10 touchdowns in the first half of the final five games of the season through Week 10 this year. The Tigers have held opponents to 11 fourth‐quarter points in the past five games against Florida, Auburn, Ole Miss, Alabama and Arkansas. LSU is trying to play its way into a New Year’s Six bowl game.

How will the Vols players respond to the firing of Coach Butch Jones? You have to say it was deserved as UT is 0-6 in the SEC after a shockingly bad 50-17 loss at Missouri on Saturday. Missouri ran for 433 yards, its most in a SEC game since joining the conference in 2012. True freshman Will McBride started the game at quarterback. McBride was the first Tennessee true freshman to start since Joshua Dobbs started against Kentucky on Nov. 30, 2013. He was the ninth true freshman to start a game at quarterback in Tennessee’s 121-year history. McBride’s start against Missouri marked the first time since 2014 that UT had started three quarterbacks in one season. McBride’s start also marked the first time that UT had started two freshmen in the same season since 2013 when the Vols started then-redshirt freshman Nathan Peterman and then-true freshman Joshua Dobbs. McBride completed 16 of 32 passes for 139 yards and rushed for 63 yards on 14 carries. He’s the first Tennessee quarterback to lead the team in rushing yards since VFL Joshua Dobbs ran for a team-high 118 yards against Nebraska in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30, 2016. Defensive line coach Brady Hoke will serve as the Volunteers’ interim head coach. He of course is the former head coach at Michigan. Jones guided Tennessee to back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2015 and 2016 but was just 3-9 in his past 12 SEC games dating back to last season. His overall record at Tennessee was 34-27. The Vols’ next coach will be Tennessee’s fifth head coach in the past 11 years. That’s after Tennessee went 32 years with just two head coaches: John Majors and Phillip Fulmer.
