We’re only a handful of matches into the Super 12 phase of the T20 World Cup 2022, and already the tournament has swung drastically.

Heading into the main section of the tournament, Australia were the favorite to win, bringing with them strong form and the benefit of playing at home. Less than four hours into the Super 12, however, Australia were pummeled by New Zealand, suffering an 89-run defeat.

The odds have swung drastically, with India and England now joint favorites, and New Zealand just behind. Here’s a look at some of the cricket action coming up this week, as a further 13 Super 12 matches unfold.

Upcoming Matches This Week

Here are all of the matches that will occur over the next seven days, as part of the T20 World Cup:

  • Tuesday October 25 – Australia vs. Sri Lanka
  • Wednesday October 26 – England vs. Ireland and New Zealand vs. Afghanistan
  • Thursday October 27 – South Africa vs. Bangladesh, India vs. Netherlands and Pakistan vs. Zimbabwe
  • Friday October 28 – Afghanistan vs. Ireland and England vs. Australia
  • Saturday October 29 – New Zealand vs. Sri Lanka
  • Sunday October 30 – Bangladesh vs. Zimbabwe, Pakistan vs. Netherlands and India vs. South Africa
  • Monday October 31 – Australia vs. Ireland

Below we look at a few of these key matches.

Australia vs Sri Lanka (Tuesday October 25)

Former tournament favorites, host nation, and defending champions, and yet already fighting for survival.

The magnitude of their loss to New Zealand—89 runs—means that their net run rate has taken such a beating that they almost certainly need to win every single one of their remaining Super 12 matches, and likely will require other matches to go their way as well.

That makes this match against Sri Lanka critical for Australia, as it is virtually knock-out cricket.

Australia head into the match -400 favorites, against Sri Lanka’s +300. However, expect Sri Lanka to play free-flowing cricket, as they are never expected to make the semi-finals playing in a pool alongside Australia, England, and New Zealand.

A loose Sri Lanka and a tight Australia could lead to an upset that sees the hosts crash out of their own World Cup about a fortnight earlier than they would have hoped, and might be worth a bet at +300.

England vs Australia (Friday October 28)

The other feature match this week also features Australia, this time against cricketing giants England.

Assuming that Australia avoids an upset against Sri Lanka, and England successfully navigates their opener against Ireland, then Friday’s game will be an absolutely cracking match.

Australia will be playing for their tournament life, knowing that if they hand England a significant defeat, it will seriously help their chances. England will be aware that Australia’s loss to New Zealand provides a real opening for them to qualify for the semifinals, and potentially even top the pool.

Just ten days ago, the two sides played a series that ended in a 2-0 win to England. Can Australia perform when it counts and give themselves a lifeline in this tournament, or will England step up to the plate and prove themselves worthy of the favorites tag they have recently been handed?

Time will tell, and odds will be out for this match once England has played Ireland on Wednesday.
