2020 Golden Globes Odds, Event Preview & Predictions

Written by on January 3, 2020

With the 2020 Golden Globes Awards getting underway on Sunday, January 5, now is a perfect time to find out which stars are looking good against their 2020 Golden Globe awards odds. The Globes is one of the most prestigious awards in the entertainment industry and unlike the Oscars, which are decided by thousands of members of the motion picture academy, the Globes are selected by less than 100 international journalists who make up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

Now, let’s take a gander at the favorites, contenders and longshots in four categories.

2020 Golden Globes Odds, Event Preview & Predictions

  • When: Sunday, January 5th, 2020.
  • Where: The Beverly Hilton, Beverly Hills, California
  • TV: NBC
  • Live Stream: NBC.com
  • Hosted by: Ricky Gervais

Best Actor (Drama)

  • Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) -400
  • Adam Driver (Marriage Story) +250
  • Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory) +750
  • Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) +1500
  • Christian Bale (Ford vs. Ferrari) +1500

Phoenix is the clear-cut favorite for his work in the widely-acclaimed Joker. Expect Antonio Banderas and Christian Bale to get some votes based on their respective fine careers, but Phoenix wins this one hands down.

Best Actor (Comedy/Musical)

  • Eddie Murphy (Dolemite is My Name) -200
  • Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) +150
  • Taron Egerton (Rocketman) +450
  • Daniel Craig (Knives Out) +650
  • Roman Griffin Davis (JoJo Rabbit) +2000

Murphy has been making quite the comeback recently and with Dolemite is My Name, playing the role of Rudy Ray Moore is generating even an Oscar buzz. So, if he wins this one, he might just be nominated and win an Academy Award

Best Actress (Drama)

  • Renee Zellweger – Judy -300
  • Scarlett Johansson – Marriage Story +170
  • Charlize Theron – Bombshell +1000
  • Saoirse Ronan – Little Women +1000
  • Cynthia Erivo – Harriet +1500

Renée Zellweger is light years ahead of the competition in this race. The superstar actress has been nominated six times and won three Golden Globes.

Best Actress (Comedy/Musical)

  • Awkwafina (The Farewell) -600
  • Ana de Armas (Knives Out) +400
  • Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart) +700
  • Emma Thompson (Late Night) +1000
  • Cate Blanchett (Where’d You Go Bernadette) +1500

If there’s one entertainer that is working their butt off is Awkwafina. With The Farewell, she delivers a fantastic performance, both compelling and heart felt. I see her taking the globe this year.

Best Film (Drama)

  • The Irishman -200
  • Marriage Story +175
  • Joker +600
  • 1917 +500
  • The Two Popes +1500

This isn’t the Oscars where some members simply haven’t caught up to today’s streaming times. That’s why the ballyhooed Martin Scorsese’s hit Netflix film The Irishman is the clear-cut pick here.

Best Film (Comedy/Musical)

  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood -350
  • JoJo Rabbit +250
  • Knives Out +600
  • Rocketman +1500
  • Dolemite is My Name +1500

Even though Eddie Murphy returned with a great movie of a specific moment in time, it didn’t make the band that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood did. Tarantino gives us a love story for the city of Los Angeles during the 1960, creating an original story, utilizing people and things that happened during that time. In this case, it was around the Manson Family murders. Tarantino created a masterpiece of movie and it’s hard not wanting to watch again and again.

Best Director

  • Bong Joo Ho – Parasite +115
  • Martin Scorsese – The Irishman -120
  • Quentin Tarantino – Once Upon a Time in Hollywood +350
  • Sam Mendes – 1917 +700
  • Todd Phillips – Joker +1200

Scorsese’s smash hit Netflix film The Irishman is the favorite here, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bong Joo Ho get the upset win in this category for his widely popular film Parasite. Todd Phillips will get a share of the popular vote, but this looks like a two-film race that Bong Joo Ho has a great chance of winning.
