2022 Academy Awards Oscar Nominations

  • When: Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022

Lady Gaga looks more than probable to pull a Cher while Kristen Stewart is the top lock to grab a nom

Cher won the Best Actress award for playing opposite Nicholas Cage in 1987’s Moonstruck. Lady Gaga received a nomination for her performance for 2019’s A Star is Born, but she didn’t win the award.

Early indications say Gaga is the front runner to not only grab a nom for playing Patrizia Reggiani, the main character in House of Gucci, but to also win. In addition to LG, the movie includes heavy hitters like Al Pacino, Jared Leto, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Irons, and Adam Driver.

A nomination is a close to sure thing. Kristen Stewart looks like a lock to join Lady G on the nomination list.

Stewart plays Lady Di in Spencer, a film about Diana deciding to end her marriage to Prince Charles. The Royal Family is all the rage after The Crown swept the Emmys. So Stewart should grab a nomination for sure.

Also, Stephen Knight, the man who brought us Peaky Blinders and wrote Eastern Promises, directs. We’re not sure how violent Spencer is. But if anybody can work in a nude bath scene that involves strangulations and blood, it’s the British auteur.

Jessica Chastain, Olivia Coleman, and Penelope Cruz are in the running for Best Actress nominations

For those who remember, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker were major celebrities back in the 1980s. The Bakker’s almost singlehandedly built big business preaching.

Think Elmer Gantry but in real life and with a lot more money. Jessica Chastain plays Tammy Faye in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Most agree that Chastain is one of the most gifted actresses on the planet. So she should be in line for an Oscar nomination.

Olivia Coleman won in 2019 for The Favourite, a movie about Queen Anne. Coleman received a nomination for The Father. Most believe she’s close to a lock to get an Academy Award nomination for The Lost Daughter, a small film about a woman on vacation and staring at her dark past.

Penelope Cruz is another with a shot at a nom. Parallel Mothers is a film about two women who give birth on the same day. Pedro Almodóvar directs, which is all we need to know. Anything Almodóvar does is worth seeing.

Nicole Kidman and Frances McDormand could be fighting for the fifth nom

A couple of Academy favorites, Nicole Kidman and Frances McDormand, could duke it out for a nomination.

Among the two, McDormand has the inside track. The three-time Oscar winner could pick up her seventh nomination for playing Lady McBeth opposite Denzel Washington in The Tragedy of McBeth

Kidman won for The Hours. That happened way back in 2003. She hasn’t gotten a nomination since 2017. So she could be due.

Not only that, but Kidman plays Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. Oscar voters love movies about their industry. Don’t look past either Kidman or McDormand upsetting the favorites and grabbing Best Actress nominations.
