Why Bet On Philadelphia?
This will be a matchup of two of the Rookie of the Year favorites in Philly’s Ben Simmons, the leader for that award right now, and the Lakers’ Lonzo Ball. They never played against one another in college as Simmons spent just one year at LSU and was in the NBA but out injured in 2016-17 when Ball played his one season at UCLA. Simmons is only the second player in NBA history to record at least 10 points, five rebounds and five assists in 11 of his first 12 games joining Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. Thanks in large part to Simmons, Philadelphia currently ranks fifth in the league in assists with 315, and second in assists per game with 26.3. Simmons’ two triple-doubles this season are tied with Houston’s James Harden and second only to Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook (four) among NBA players. Simmons’ 12.8 points in the paint per game rank fifth in the NBA. The Sixers have made at least 10 three-pointers in eight consecutive games, which is the third-longest such streak in the NBA this season behind only Golden State (13 games) and Houston (nine games). As a team, Philadelphia’s 150 three-pointers rank fifth in the league, while its 40.2 percent mark from long distance is third. The 76ers held the longest streak of 50-rebounds games in the NBA this season, corralling at least 50 boards in each of their last four games. Saturday against Milwaukee, Ball’s 17 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists made him the youngest player in NBA history with a triple-double. At 20 years and 20 days, he beat LeBron James by five days to take away the record. Ball’s passing has been strong all season (even if his decision making on drives needed to improve), and his rebounding for his position has been strong, but it’s the shooting which has held him back. On Saturday he was 7-of-12 overall, and 3-of-5 from three. Alas, L.A. lost the game. Ball isn’t the only good Lakers rookie. Kyle Kuzma has four 20-point games and four double-doubles this season. This could easily be a preview of the NBA Finals. The Warriors are heavy favorites to win another championship, while Boston has the best record in the NBA. Entering this week, Golden State has won its last six games, each decided by a margin of 17 points or more to match the NBA record set by the 1989-90 Phoenix Suns. The Warriors are averaging a league-leading 32.6 ppg in the third quarter this season (after averaging 31.2 ppg in the third last season). Golden State has made at least 10 3-pointers in every game this season, the only team to do so.
Klay Thompson has made at least one 3-pointer in 67 consecutive games he has played in, the longest active streak in the NBA. It’s also the longest streak of his career, surpassing his previous best of 37 straight. The 67-game consecutive 3-point field goal streak is the ninth-longest in NBA history. Reggie Miller is in eighth place with 68 straight games with at least a 3-pointer. Thompson’s streak is the third-longest in Warriors franchise history, behind two by Stephen Curry. Curry’s longest was 157.
