Road to March Madness
Villanova (28-4 SU, 21-11 ATS, 22-10 O/U) was ranked first in the nation for the vast majority of the regular season and rightfully so. The Wildcats opened the season by ripping off 13 straight wins until they lost to a perennial thorn in the side Butler 101-93 on Dec. 30. Nova then won nine more games in a row to improve to 22-1 on the season before falling to St. John’s 79-75 in an absolute stunner. From that point, Villanova suffered two more losses over their final seven regular season games by losing at Providence and at Creighton in overtime. The Cats closed out their regular season with a pair of wins over dangerous Seton Hall and rebuilding Georgetown to finish at 27-4 on the year and ranked fourth nationally. Ironically though, Villanova finished one spot behind a third-ranked Xavier Musketeers squad they managed to beat down emphatically, twice, during the regular season. Villanova beat Xavier 89-65 at home on Jan. 10 to cash in a whopping 9.5-point home favorite and then they smacked the Musketeers senseless by winning 95-79 at Xavier on Feb. 17 to bounce back from their 76-71 road loss to Providence.Talking Numbers
The Wildcats ranked first in the nation in scoring by putting up an insane 87.2 points per game while also ranking fifth in field goal shooting percentage (50.6%), 25th in three-point shooting (39.5%) and 25th in free throw shooting (76.8%). Villanova also limited the opposition to a modest 71.2 points per game (146th) one 43.5 percent shooting from the field (161st) and 32.6 percent from beyond the arc (50th). Villanova is also one of the few teams in the nation to have six double-digit scorers on their roster. They’ve got a superstar point guard in Jalen Brunson (19.0 ppg), a trio of sweet-shooting perimeter players including likely NBA performer Mikal Bridges (17.6 ppg) and a five-star big man down low that is just scratching the surface of his potential in his first year in Omari Spellman (10.2 ppg).
The Wildcats also have big-game experience with Brunson, Bridges, Phil Booth, Donte DiVincenzo and Eric Paschall all playing on the 2015-16 championship-winning squad. Last but not least Villanova also has an excellent head coach that has won it all before in Jay Wright.
