As the month of February is quickly dwindling away, we’re approaching conference tournament time. With that being said, every game becomes that much more important. In looking at Thursday, February 16th’s slate of games, we’ve found some that have caught our NCAA basketball betting eye. We’ll preview each game, and then we’ll give you our best betting advice.

Purdue Boilermakers @ Maryland Terrapins

The Purdue Boilermakers are one of the top teams in the country. Despite losing two of their last three games, they still sit among the top five teams. They’ll head to Maryland for a huge conference tilt on Thursday night.

Despite hitting a rough patch in the middle of the Big 10 campaign, the Terps have seemed to turn things around as of late. At 17-8 overall, and 8-6 in the Big 10, Maryland hopes to take advantage of Purdue’s recent struggles, and deal them another road loss in Big 10 play. When these two met earlier in the season, Purdue survived a rough night and came away with a three-point home victory.

Maryland will obviously have to find a way to slow down Purdue’s All-American and Player of the Year candidate Zach Edey. The 7’4” Edey has been a nightmare for opposing defenses this season. Maryland may not be able to fully stop him, but if they can make things difficult for him, it will go a long way in helping the Terps to a victory.

We figure that Purdue will be a 2-4 point favorite in this one. While Maryland will play them tough, we just don’t see them being able to beat Purdue. The Boilermakers need to get back on the winning track, and they’ll pull away late. We give the nod to Purdue in this one.

Houston Cougars @ Southern Methodist University Mustangs

Where: Moody Coliseum, Dallas

Kelvin Sampson has the Houston Cougars sitting at #2 in the most recent polls. His Cougars will head to SMU to take on the Mustangs on Thursday night. SMU is having a rough season, currently sitting at 9-17 overall, while sporting a 4-9 record in the American Athletic Conference.

Houston continues on its quest for a National Championship. At 23-2 overall, and 11-1 in the AAC, the Cougars have been tough to stop this season. Houston plays very good defense, limiting their opponents to just over 61 points per game.

SMU can put up points, as they average nearly 74 points per game. Unfortunately, they are very poor on the defensive end, giving up nearly 80 points per contest. We look for Houston to put up a lot of points on a very suspect SMU defense.

SMU comes into this one with a 6-7 record on their home floor. While they should be able to score on Houston, we just can’t see them slowing a very good Houston offense down. The Cougars are playing well, and are on a quest to return to the Final Four again this season.

Houston should be a double-digit favorite in this one, and we like the Cougars. Houston should take advantage of a poor SMU defense and put up a lot of points. We see the Cougars winning this one, and along with the win, covering the spread.
