On Jan. 3, Purdue was upset at home by Wisconsin 74-69. Badgers star Johnny Davis scored a career-high 37 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in one of the great games of the season. Davis was going 13 of 24 from the field, 2 of 5 on 3-pointers and 9 of 12 at the free-throw line. He also led the Badgers (with two blocks and two steals. Davis was the first Division I player to lead his team in all five categories in a road win over a top-five foe since Tim Duncan did it for Wake Forest against Maryland on Feb. 1, 1997. Zach Edey led Purdue with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Why Bet on Purdue?

Purdue (24-5) had a three-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a 68-65 loss at Michigan State. Tyson Walker made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 3 seconds left. The dramatic victory over the Boilermakers was win No. 662 for Spartans coach Tom Izzo, equaling Bobby Knight’s total with Indiana from 1972 to 2000.

Purdue rallied from an 11-point deficit midway through the second half and pulled into a tie twice in the last minute. The Boilermakers had two chances to extend the game after Walker’s 3-pointer just beat the shot clock but couldn’t capitalize.

Purdue’s 17 turnovers matched a season high (Wright State, Iowa). When Purdue scores under 70 points, the Boilermakers are 0-5. When scoring 70 or more points, Purdue is 24-0. Three of Purdue’s five losses have come on buzzer-beaters (Michigan State’s Walker; Indiana’s Rob Phinisee; Rutgers’ Ron Harper Jr.).

Purdue lost for the first time this season when shooting at least 48.0 percent from the field (19-1 on the season). The Boilermakers are now 23-2 when shooting a higher field goal percentage (Indiana, Michigan State). Zach Edey scored a career-high 25 points in just 22 minutes, making 10-of-15 from the field. He now has 12 career games where he has scored more points than minutes played.

Tuesday’s game marks the lowest combined ranking (18) between Purdue (8) and Wisconsin (10) in series history (185 meetings). Purdue is looking for its first top-10 road win since a 60-57 win over No. 4 Ohio State on Feb. 17, 2010). Purdue is a nation’s-best 6-0 against teams ranked in the NCAA NET top-20 rankings.

A Purdue win would give the Boilermakers a chance at their 25th Big Ten championship, while a Wisconsin win sews up at least a share of the Big Ten title for the Badgers.

Why Bet on Wisconsin?

Wisconsin (23-5) won its fourth in a row Saturday, 66-61 at Rutgers to move one win from the Big Ten regular-season title. Geo Baker had 16 of his 19 points in the second half to lead Rutgers, but missed a game-tying 3-point attempt with four seconds to play.

Star Johnny Davis finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Davis has scored in double figures in 25 of 26 games this season. Tyler Wahl notched 11 points and 9 rebounds. He scored in double figures for the 12th time in the last 14 games. Senior Brad Davison is having the best year of his career, ranking 16th in the Big Ten scoring 14.2 ppg. He is shooting 34.2% from 3-point range.

Davis is playing like an All-American and is the only Big Ten player to lead his team in ppg (20.6), rpg (8.3) and apg (2.4). During conference play, Davis has been even better, ranking 2nd in the Big Ten in both points (20.8 ppg) and rebounds (9.2 rpg).

The Badgers are off to their best start of the Greg Gard era. UW’s record of 23-5 matches the school’s 4th-best 28-game start in program history. UW is now 14-4 in the Big Ten, matching the most conference wins in the Gard era. This is the third time a Gard-led team has won 14 Big Ten games (also 2018-19 and 2019-20). Wisconsin finished the season 8-2 in road games during Big Ten play, equaling the 2007-08 team for the most conference road wins in a single season.

Including a win at No. 3 Purdue this season, Gard has led UW to 9 top-10 wins. If it wins its next two games, UW will be the outright Big Ten champions. Should it split the final two games, it will earn no worse than a share of the regular-season title. No matter the outcome of this week, Wisconsin has already locked up the all-important double-bye in the conference tournament in Indianapolis from March 9–13.
