The final week of the college basketball season is winding down and championship week is wrapping up this weekend. While some automatic qualifiers have already punched their ticket to the big dance, there are still a lot of things to be sorted out over the weekend before Selection Sunday.

The Rams have been a nice story this season, quietly going 25-7 overall and 12-6 in Atlantic 10 league play. The duo of Darius Quissenbury and Khalid Moore has been dynamic all season, combining for over 32 points per contest. The problem has been that they receive little help so if either was to struggle, Keith Urgo’s club could be in for a long night.
Dayton entered the tournament with a 20-11 overall record on the season and 12-6 record in league play. The Flyers skated by La Salle on Thursday. Anthony Grant’s club is led by a trio of forwards in DaRon Holmes II, Toumani Camara, and Mustapha Amzil, who combined to score roughly 40 points per contest while snatching up 20 rebounds per contest.
In the previous meeting this season, the only time these two programs met this year, Dayton absolutely boat-raced Fordham by a count of 82-58. The Flyers jumped out to an 18-4 lead and never looked back. Holmes dominated the paint with 32 points on 12-14 shooting while also going 8-10 from the line. The sophomore big man also grabbed six rebounds and blocked a couple shots. Fordham has been a nice story, but all Dayton really has to do is stop one of their two scorers for a repeat of January 10th to occur.

These two teams will meet for the third time this season in the Atlantic 10 semifinals, with the winner taking on the victor of the game above. Mike Rhoades’ club took both previous meetings, one by eight points and the other by 12, which was the most recent result. The Rams held Saint Louis to 65 and 67 points in those meetings, which has been their calling card all season.
It feels as if VCU and Dayton have been on a crash course for the Atlantic Ten title all season, and while VCU’s offense is not the greatest, their defense is tremendous. The Rams rank 12th in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency, and while the offensive efficiency ranking of 157th isn’t great, they have scored at least 71 points in each of their last six games.
Saint Louis had some expectations entering the season but never really put it all together other than a nice stretch in January. This is a team that has defeated Memphis, Providence, and Drake but also lost to UMass, St. Bonaventure, and SIU Edwardsville. Despite the old saying “it’s difficult to defeat the same team three times in a season” , it’s also difficult to trust a team that proves time and time again that they are untrustworthy.
