1. Tom Brady
I’m really not the biggest Tom Brady fan, probably because I’m a lifelong Miami Dolphins fan (Shhh), but you know what, I just can’t hate the man anymore! Brady is playing like a spry 25-year-old instead of the ‘old man’ he’s supposed to start looking like any day now. At age 40, Brady is completing an insane 68.4 percent of his passes for 3,374 yards with 26 touchdowns and just three interceptions! Brady is going down as the greatest quarterback in NFL history and now, years late, I say, rightfully so. Brady makes the right play almost every single time he drops back to pass and just can’t be stopped. I’m sorry, but even if you hate the Patriots (I do) there’s just no denying that Tom Brady gives New England (9-2 SU, 7-4 ATS) a chance to win every single game he plays in and is the No. 1 driving reason why the Patriots could win back-to-back Super Bowls this season.2. Bill Belichick
I might as well keep going with my theme of why an AFC team will win the Super Bowl this season by moving on to a guy that is apparently going to go down as arguably the greatest head coach in NFL history. Much like Tom Brady, I’m not a big fan of the stoic Bill Belichick and his ‘lovable’ demeanor, but the guy can coach football unlike almost anyone before him. Of course, while it helps to have the greatest quarterback the game has ever known, Belichick has made his own mark, by making all the right moves in his time with the Patriots and that includes building perennial powerful defenses. Better yet, Belichick has gotten the job done with everyone he’s ever had suit up for him from Hall of Famers to average Joe’s and everyone else in between. In 18 seasons leading the Patriots, Belichick has gone 210-73 with five Super Bowl titles and two additional AFC championships. As much as it pains me to write it, Bill Belichick is the No. 2 reason why an AFC team will win Super Bowl LII and LIII and….oh hell, you get the idea!3. Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) look like the team with the best chance to win Super Bowl 52 besides the New England Patriots. Pittsburgh has a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger that has already won two Super Bowls in his career, a no-nonsense head coach in Mike Tomlin that has already won one title himself (2008) and both, arguably the best wide receiver and running back in the game today in Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell.
The Steelers are playing excellent defense this season in ranking fourth in points allowed (17.5 ppg) and really have the look of a team that is about sick and tired of playing second fiddle to the Pats.
4. The Tom Coughlin Effect
Clearly, Jacksonville Jaguars Vice President of football operations (why is he not president?) knows how to build a winning football team! First, he put the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars (7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) on the map in just their second season of existence and got them to reach the postseason four consecutive seasons from 1996-1999. Then he won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants (2007, 2011) and now he’s got the Jags back on the map, this time as a front office man who’s been pretty much given the freedom to build the Jags as he sees fit. Sure, the Jags aren’t quite where he’d like them to be as a top-notch Super Bowl contender, but he has helped the franchise become winners again after they failed to win more than five games in six straight seasons from 2011 to 2016. Maybe it’s me, but I say nothing is impossible for Tom Coughlin, including winning Super Bowl LII.5. Reid’s Due!
Say what you want about Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid (everyone in Philadelphia does), but the fact of the matter is that I can’t think of a head coach that is more ‘due’ to win a Super Bowl than Reid is. In 19 years leading the Eagles and Chiefs, Reid has recorded 11 double-digit winning seasons while winning nine games in two other seasons. Reid, who is 179-119-1 in his career, took Philadelphia to the 2004 Super Bowl and almost beat New England before falling by a field goal to Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Kansas City has reached the double-digit win mark in each of the last two seasons and could get back on track to contend after struggling following their red-hot 5-0 start this season. Then again, I could be totally wrong. Maybe Reid is just a very good head coach that will never get it done when it matters most, but again, he just has the look of a guy that is due to win one at some point, and why not Super Bowl LII?Recent Super Bowl History (Last 10 Match-Ups)
