Who’s Under Center?

Look, when it comes to winning and losing in the NFL, it all starts with the quarterback. Case in point. I’ve got a whole lot more faith in the Houston Texans having a successful season with second-year signal-caller Deshaun Watson under center than I do the Buffalo Bills with either veteran A.J. McCarron or uninspiring second-year signal-caller Nathan Peterman calling the shots. Know what the starting quarterback – and backup quarterback – positions are before you starting making betting decisions.

Was There a Coaching Change?

Another great tip is for you to know which teams made coaching changes and which ones look like they’ll either be successful ventures or challenging tenures. Let’s just look at the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants for example. Tennessee went out and hired former Houston Texans defensive coordinator (2017) Mike Vrabel after going 9-7 under former head coach Mike Mularkey. The Giants hired former Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur as their head coach to replace the idiotic Ben McAdoo.

Now, I’ve got a whole lot more faith in Shurmur being successful with the G-Men than I do of Vrabel finding success in Tennessee. First of all, Pat Shurmur has been around for quite some time. He was the quarterback coach with the Eagles from 2002-2008 and then, the offensive coordinators for the St. Louis Rams from 2009-2010. He was also the head coach in Cleveland in 2011 and 2012 and an offensive coordinator with the Eagles in 2013-2015. He was the tight ends coach and interim offensive coordinator with Minnesota and the official O-coordinator with the Vikes last season. The point is, he’s been around the block and knows his stuff. Vrabel, on the other hand, was the linebackers coach with the Texans from 2014-2016 and the defensive coordinator for one year (2017). You would think the Titans would bring in a really good offensive-minded head coach to bring out the best in young franchise quarterback Marcus Mariots, but that’s not the case and Vrabel will be a first-time head coach. Only time will tell what happens in both situations, but you need to know what went down as far as coaching changes before the new campaign.

Check The Offensive Line!

While I said winning and losing in the NFL starts with the quarterback, I could change that statement to say that it actually starts with the offensive line. Teams with good offensive lines can both, protect their quarterback and run the football. Teams with poor offensive lines or ones that are constantly in a state of flux, generally don’t tend to be very successful. Make sure you know what’s going down with each and every team’s offensive line before you drop your hard-earned NFL betting bucks on them!
