Jaguars Face 49ers as NFL Lines Favorites Looking to Win AFC South

Written by on December 22, 2017

A couple of weeks ago, this trip across country looked like an easy win for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Then, the San Francisco 49ers switched to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and everything changed. The Jags are still NFL lines favorites but not by much.

Why Bet on Jacksonville’s NFL Lines?

The Jacksonville Jaguars secured a spot in the playoffs last Sunday in emphatic fashion, with a dismantling of the Houston Texans 45-7. It is the first playoff trip for Jacksonville since 2007. The Jaguars are currently the No. 3 seed in the AFC playoff race but their shot at getting a top-two seed and first-round bye week is still possible.Should the Jags win here, it would give the team its first ever AFC South title and first overall division crown since 1999 (no AFC South then). The division title would guarantee the Jaguars would get at least one home playoff game, which would also be a first since ‘99. If the Jaguars lose out and the Titans win out, Tennessee would win the South. Getting a top-two seed requires the Jags to win out and the Pittsburgh Steelers to lose at least once, which is rather unlikely. The best quarterback in the NFL this month? One Blake Bortles. In last week’s blowout of Houston, he was 21-for-29, 326 passing yards, three TDs, a passer rating of 143.7. He only had four incompletions that weren’t throwaways. He had a perfect passer rating when he wasn’t pressured.  Bortles was 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) for 201 yards and a touchdown on throws of 10-plus yards downfield in Week 15. Bortles is the first signal-caller in franchise history with three straight games with a passer rating above 100 and multiple passing touchdowns without an interception. In December, Bortles has completed 71 percent of his passes, is tied for the NFL lead in touchdown passes (7) and has the highest passer rating of any quarterback at 128.6.  Nick Foles is the only other quarterback who has not thrown an interception in December, but he’s made only one start in the month. The Jags are expecting rookie running back Leonard Fournette back this week after he missed the Texans game with an ankle injury. WR Allen Hurns returned to practice Wednesday. It’s his first action since suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 10. Hurns’ return comes at a good time with Marqise Lee now dealing with an ankle issue of his own that could keep him out Week 16.

Why Bet on San Francisco’s NFL Lines?

What’s up with Jimmy Garoppolo? The 49ers quarterback has started a total of five games in his career and he’s 5-0 both straight-up and against the spread in those games. Jimmy G is the first quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger in 2004 to win his first five games. In last week’s comeback win over the Titans, Garoppolo completed 31-of-43 passes for a career-high 381 yards, one touchdown and a quarterback rating of 106.8. Marquise Goodwin registered a single-game career-high 10 receptions for 114 yards. Goodwin has now recorded more than 100 yards in consecutive games for the first time in his career.  Trailing 23-22 in the fourth quarter, Robbie Gould kicked a 45-yard game-winning field goal as time expired. Gould went 6-for-6 on field goals, a single-game career-high, and tied for the most made field goals in a single game in franchise history. Are the 49ers a safe betting pick in Week 16?The 49ers held the Titans to 90 yards rushing on 28 carries. San Francisco’s defense has held their opponent under 100 yards rushing in four consecutive games for the first time since Weeks 14-17 of the 2013 season.Since Week 13, Garoppolo is 3-0 and ranks second in the NFL with 1,008 passing yards. Garoppolo aims for his third game in row with 300 or more passing yards. Over the last three weeks, Goodwin is tied for first in the NFL with 24 receptions. Goodwin has averaged 106.3 yards in three games with Garoppolo under center, though he gets a tough matchup against Jacksonville’s No. 1 pass defense.Since 2011, the Jags are just 1-11 in December road games and they haven’t won a game in California since 2005 (0-6).

Expert Prediction & NFL Week 16 Pick

Has the potential to be a bit of a trap game for the Jags, but they’ll keep their eye on the prize and win by a TD.
