Preseason Week 2 Jets vs. Redskins NFL Betting Prediction

When: Friday, August 19, 2016 at 7:30 PM ET Where: FedExField NFL Odds: Washington -3.5 Over/Under: 40

Bet on the NY Jets +3. Points Because…

The Jets have an elite defense and Ryan Fitzpatrick back on the roster! The New York Jets (10-6 SU, 8-6-2 ATS) look to build on their hard-fought 17-13 preseason win over the Jacksonville Jaguars last week and they could get the win because of their elite defense. Backup quarterback Bryce Petty led the Jets with 93 passing yards on seven completions while starter Ryan Fitzpatrick played two series with the starters, going 3 of 4 for 72 yards. Running back Bilal Powell scored on a four-yard run and backup Geno Smith went 8-for-14 for 79 yards with one TD pass. Receivers Quincy Enunwa and Jeremy Ross combined for 120 receiving yards on five catches while Charone Peake caught Smith’s touchdown strike.

Bet on Washington -3.5 Points Because…

The Skins are playing at home and coming off a crushing loss. Washington (9-8 SU. 9-8 ATS) was on the wrong end of a crushing 23-17 to the Atlanta Falcons. Starting quarterback Kirk Cousins completed went 5-for-5 for 39 yards on his only drive while backup Colt McCoy played the remainder of the first half while going 7 of 11 passes for 53 yards and leading the Skins to their only score of the half, a 41-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins. “Good first step, as preseason game number one ought to be,” Cousins said. However, it was backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld that outplayed both quarterbacks. Down 23-3, the 6-6 Sudfeld led Washington on two touchdown drives while finishing 10 of 15 passes for 89 yards, including a 6-yard scoring pass to tight end Marcel Jensen.

Expert Prediction and Betting Pick

The Redskins went 5-4 ATS at home a year ago, but New York went 3-3-2 ATS on the road in 2015. Not only that, but statistically, the Jets were better than the Skins on both sides of the ball last season and particularly on defense where New York limited their opponents to almost five fewer points per game. More importantly, I believe the Jets have the better backup quarterbacks in this contest and a huge edge in the coaching department.   The Jets are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 3-0-1 ATS in their last four  meetings against the Redskins. The value for this Week 2 preseason pairing is with the New York Jets.

My Pick: New York 24 Washington 20
