Last MeetingIn 2014, the Niners lost in Oakland 24-13. Raiders QB Derek Carr, who is still there, threw three TD passes. Carr, then a rookie, completed 22 of 28 passes for 254 yards and completely outplayed counterpart Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick threw an interception on the first play from scrimmage, was sacked on San Francisco’s last and wasn’t much better in between. He finished 18-for-33 for 174 yards with one touchdown, two interceptions, and five sacks.
This will be the last battle of the Bay Area because the Raiders are moving to Las Vegas for the 2020 season. Although there’s some chatter that the Raiders might have to play their home games at the Niners’ Levi’s Stadium next year because the team and the City of Oakland are at odds about a lease for next year before the move.
Why Bet on Oakland? The Raiders came out of their bye week Sunday and still laid an egg, falling 42-28 to the Colts after being outscored 21-0 in the fourth. Andrew Luck threw his third touchdown pass of the game to break a tie with 5:28 to go. The Colts finished with 222 yards rushing and didn’t allow a sack.
Derek Carr threw three TD passes and ran for a fourth just days after Oakland traded his top receiver Amari Cooper to Dallas. Carr completed 21-of-28 passes for 244 yards and rushed for another touchdown. It’s been a turbulent week for Carr, who has been the subject of trade rumors and has also had the media question his toughness. Carr was so accurate that at one point he strung together 17 straight completions.
Doug Martin collected 72 yards on 13 carries while also snagging two catches for 17 yards in the loss. Martin lost a fumble at the worst possible time with Oakland trying to mount a fourth-quarter comeback. He was also stonewalled on each of his two goal-line carries during the third quarter. Martin became the featured back when Marshawn Lynch went on IR.
Jon Gruden isn’t sure if Lynch would return to play for Oakland this season. “I would say it would be very difficult but I’m never going to shut the door on a guy like that,” Gruden said, adding that the Raiders are already eyeing the likes of defensive tackle Justin Ellis, who is expected to start practicing this week, and right tackle Donald Penn, who suffered a groin injury against the Browns in Week 4, as the Raiders’ two return-from-IR candidates. Lynch was injured late in the Raiders’ 27-3 loss to the Seahawks in London two weeks ago and would not be eligible to return for a game until the penultimate game of the season.
The Raiders have told Carr that he is their quarterback now and for the foreseeable future, affirming Gruden’s assertion that Oakland will not trade the three-time Pro Bowler. Oakland could trade linebacker Bruce Irvin and safety Karl Joseph, who have both come up in trade conversations with other teams, and either could be dealt by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline.
Why Bet on San Francisco? The Arizona Cardinals might well be the worst team in the NFL, but they have two wins. Both are against San Francisco. On Sunday, the Cards, the NFL’s worst offense, rallied from a 15-3 fourth-quarter deficit to win 18-15 and sweep the season series. Josh Rosen threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to fellow rookie Christian Kirk with 34 seconds to play. The Cardinals, winners at home for the first time under first-year coach Steve Wilks, beat San Francisco for the eighth straight time and the second time in three weeks.
C.J. Beathard completed 14-of-28 passes for 190 yards and one score. It’s the second consecutive game Beathard’s failed to eclipse 200 yards. He’s only trended down since exploding out of the gates in place of Jimmy Garoppolo due in part to constant injuries among the Niners’ receiving corps and offensive line.
Kendrick Bourne trapped 7-of-10 targets for a team-high 71 yards. Bourne started in place of Pierre Garcon (knee). Marquise Goodwin hauled in just 1-of-4 targets for a 55-yard touchdown scamper. Matt Breida rushed a team-high 16 times for 42 yards. He had been listed as questionable.
49ers LB Reuben Foster (hamstring) left in Week 8. Foster, SS Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder), and CB Ahkello Witherspoon also exited early for the Niners. All are very questionable Thursday on a short week.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the team has had trade talks about Garcon. “He’s one of the guys that people have asked about and we have talked about, but nothing is going down right now,” Shanahan said. “We’ll see how these next two days play out with Pierre and a lot of people.” Any team that acquires Garcon would have to pick up the rest of his $6.625 million salary for this season.
