Analysis:
Okay, I’m going to begin by saying that the outcome of McVay’s first season with the Rams is a virtual lock. Sean McVay was a coaching assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008 before taking a job as the tight ends coach with the Florida Tuskers one year later.

One year after that, McVay was hired by the Washington Redskins (2010) as an assistant tight ends coach before getting the full-fledged job as tight ends coach from 2011-2013. In 2014, McVay was named the offensive coordinator in the nation’s capital and held that position through the end of this season.

Now, McVay will look to lead the Rams back from the depths of despair, but football fns everywhere want to know if he’ll flame out as a one-and-done head coach. Well, let’s look back first before going forward.

In his first year as offensive coordinator, McVay helped Washington to finish the season ranked 12th in passing and 10th overall under first-year starting quarterback, Kirk Cousins a year after the Skins finished ranked 25th in total offense. In his second year as offensive coordinator, Washington finished the season ranked third in passing (309.3 ypg) and 12th in total offense.

Now, McVay, the grandson of former San Francisco 49ers GM John McVay, has his work cut out for him in rebuilding a Rams team that has been mostly abysmal on offense under the old-school Fisher.

Personally, I don’t see any way whatsoever that McVay gets canned before finishing up his first season in L.A., particularly seeing as how the Los Angeles Rams were either mediocre or less than that during the entirety o Jeff Fisher’s stint with the Rams.

I suspect that McVay will help the Rams’ offense and No. 1 overall draft pick Jared Goff improve dramatically in his first season and I wouldn’t be completely surprised to see the Rams reach 8-8 on the season, seeing show they already have a ferocious defense that may feature the best defensive line in the league.

Forget the top three selections on McVay’s coaching odds and simply back him to finish out the season whether the Rams fly high or sink to even lower depths than they ones they routinely hovered around during Jeff Fisher’s tenure.
