The NHL regular season is drawing to a close, with the playoffs now right around the corner. There are not a lot of NHL betting odds opportunities left for those looking to build their bankroll with hockey, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try and look for some surefire winners, as well as a few longshot picks that might play out in the postseason. President’s Trophy Pick

You may not get particularly great odds right now, but you can add a little bit to your bankroll by going with the Washington Capitals. There are still conceivably 4 teams that could end the season with the best record in the NHL, but it is the Capitals who are finishing the strongest of the bunch. They have a 3-point lead on the pack right now, and are on the type of winning run that should see them hold on to the finish.

Look out for the Lightning

There is essentially just one playoff spot up for grabs across both conferences, and that would be the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. It is the Boston Bruins who have that spot right now, as they have a 3-point lead over Tampa Bay. What the Lightning have is a game in hand and some serious momentum. They have won 3 straight and 7 of their last 10, plus they have a favorable remaining schedule, which includes a game versus the Bruins. I think the Lightning sneak into that final playoff spot.

Playoff Dark Horse

There is usually always one team that plays the role of the dark horse in the playoffs, going deeper than anyone expected. I think that the team best equipped to do that this year is the Calgary Flames. They have been the hottest team in the league over the last month and a half of the season, and still have a legitimate shot at winning the Pacific Division, especially since their remaining 7 games are against division foes. A lot will hinge on their final seeding, but what out for the Flames heading into the postseason.

Stanley Cup Winner

The Washington Capitals are sitting as the current favorites to hoist the Stanley Cup, but I have a bit of a problem with that. This is a team that has made a habit of doing great in the regular season, only to quickly fall apart in the playoffs. Since we believe that they are going to win the President’s Trophy, it’s worth noting that very rarely does the team with the best regular season record win the Stanley Cup. I like team with playoff experience, and that to me is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Yes, defending the crown is tough, but these guys have the horses to do it.
