Senators vs Red Wings 2020 NHL Odds, Preview & Prediction

Written by on January 10, 2020

The Detroit Red Wings are one of the marquee franchises in the NHL and one its most successful all-time. However, the 2019-20 Red Wings might be the worst team in franchise history. Detroit hasn’t been favored often this season but should be on the Mybookie NHL odds Friday against the visiting Ottawa Senators.

How to Bet Senators vs Red Wings NHL Odds & Game Info

Season Series

Ottawa leads 2-0. They last met on Nov. 19 in Detroit and the Sens prevailed 4-3. That was DJ Smith’s first game as Ottawa’s head coach. Smith grew up in Windsor, Ontario, which is across the Detroit River from Detroit. He regularly attended Red Wings games at their former home, Joe Louis Arena. Anthony Duclair had two goals and an assist for the Sens. John Gabriel Pageau and Brady Tkachuk also scored for Ottawa.

Anders Nilsson made 35 saves, including 15 in the third period when the Senators were outshot 16-3. Jonathan Bernier stopped 29 shots in the loss for Detroit, which got goals from Valtteri Filppula, Robby Fabbri and Anthony Mantha.

Why Bet on Ottawa?

The Senators were the NHL’s worst club last season and aren’t a heck of a lot better this year and enter on a five-game losing streak – the past four by multiple goals. It was 6-1 at Washington on Tuesday. Alex Ovechkin had two goals for the Caps and now has 684 career, tying him for 11th place with Teemu Selanne for 11th place on the NHL’s all-time goals list. Ovechkin has six multi-goal games this season. Ovechkin’s first goal gave Washington a 3-1 lead after two periods, and his second at 16:19 of the third period was the Capitals’ sixth straight. They trailed 1-0 after one.

Artem Anisimov posted his eighth goal of the season for Ottawa. He ended up with a minus-1 rating and four shots on goal while winning five of his nine faceoff attempts (55.6 percent) in 14:39 of ice time across 21 shifts.

More Numbers

Craig Anderson allowed five goals on 30 shots in the loss. Anderson was pulled early in the third period in favor of Marcus Hogberg, who allowed one goal on 11 shots in his 17:52 after entering the game. Anderson is to 0-3-1 across his past four outings, and he has allowed at least four goals in each of those outings. Probably will be Hogberg on Friday.

Defenseman Ron Hainsey could be ready for Friday’s game. Hainsey has been skating and he is getting closer to a return. He hasn’t played since Dec. 19 due to a lower-body injury. Fellow blueliner Christian Jaros left Tuesday’s game against Washington in the third period. Jaros was involved in a collision with Capitals forward T.J. Oshie.

Left wing Nick Paul is expected to miss at least two weeks after he sustained a lower-body injury on Tuesday. Paul suffered what is reportedly an ankle/leg injury in the second period after he attempted to make a hit along the boards. Paul has six goals and 13 points in 38 games this season.

Why Bet on Detroit?

The Red Wings actually won a rare game Tuesday, 4-3 over visiting Montreal. Detroit has 11 wins on the season and three are against the Canadiens. Before the season began, the Wings had lost eight consecutive games against Montreal.

“I don’t know why we’re 3-0 against Montreal but I’m more happy with the performance,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “We did a lot of good things, we didn’t beat ourselves, we played more efficient overall.”

The Red Wings had lost two in a row and 20 of their last 23, giving them the NHL’s worst record by a wide margin. Filip Zadina scored the game-winning goal on Tuesday.

Senators vs Red Wings is going to be a close one.

Zadina snapped a 3-3 tie at the 16:08 mark of the third period and the Red Wings held on for the win after trailing for the entire contest up that point. He has accounted for five goals and six assists since Nov. 24 when he was called up from the minors, which ties him for second on the team in points during that span.

Frans Nielsen picked up a pair of goals in the win while winning six of his 10 faceoff attempts. He entered the game with just one goal, three assists and a minus-7 rating across his first 38 games. Robby Fabbri scored his 11th goal of the season. Fabbri tied the game at 2-2 just 51 seconds into the third period. He has 10 goals and 19 points in 27 games with the Red Wings since he was acquired from St. Louis.

Jonathan Bernier allowed three goals on 26 shots. Bernier improved to 9-12-2 with a 3.04 goals-against average and .903 save percentage across his 27 appearances this season.
