Boston Bruins at New York Rangers, Wednesday

It’s a matchup of Original Six teams in their first matchup of the new season. The game will be televised by the NBC Sports Network. Will the Bruins have No. 1 goalie Tuukka Rask for this one? Rask was out Saturday vs. Montreal with an undisclosed injury that didn’t appear serious. Coach Claude Julien said before the game: “We”re going to shut him off and give him another day’s rest at least.” Bruins LW Brad Marchand needs two points for 300 in his career. Boston D Adam McQuaid is still listed as day-to- day with an unspecified injury and hasn’t played in a game this season. The Rangers enter on a two-game winning streak after a 3-2 win over Arizona on Sunday. Dan Girardi returned to the lineup and scored 1:55 into the final period. The veteran was paired with rookie Brady Skjei in his first game after missing New York’s previous three with a strained groin, and Skjei assisted on the goal. Josh Jooris and J.T. Miller also scored for the Rangers, who have 12 players with at least one goal this season and 20 players with at least one point. Go Rangers here.

Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues, Thursday

These two were long-time division rivals until the Red Wings shifted to the Eastern Conference in realignment a few years ago. So now the teams play just twice a season. Last year in St. Louis, the Wings won 4-3 in overtime. Teemu Pulkkinen scored with 18.8 seconds remaining in overtime. Jimmy Howard made 30 saves for the Red Wings. In the game in Detroit, the Blues won 2-1. Brian Elliott stopped 29 shots but he’s not with the Blues this season. Dmitri Jaskin scored a key third-period goal. Henrik Zetterberg spoiled Elliott’s shutout bid with 2:13 remaining with a power-play goal through Justin Abdelkader’s screen to pull Detroit within one. I like St. Louis.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens, Saturday

It’s arguably the best rivalry in the NHL as these two Original Six teams square off. The biggest story of the early season has been Leafs rookie Auston Matthews. He has eight points in five games to lead all NHL rookies, including a record-setting four-goal game in his debut. This will be his first game in the historic hockey city of Montreal. Matthews isn’t the only good-looking rookie on the team. On Saturday, Toronto rookie William Nylander scored twice for his first multi-goal game, with the 20-year-old’s second goal putting the Maple Leafs ahead 4-2 early in the third against Chicago. But Toronto blew a lead in the final period for the third straight game and dropped its third straight, going 0-1- 2 on a road trip. Montreal won a third straight game in Boston on Saturday. Carey Price stopped 19 shots in his second start, and Brendan Gallagher and Phillip Danault each had second-period goals. Price, playing just his second game after a bout with the flu at the start of the season, missed most of last season with a right knee injury. He won his season debut, stopping 27 shots against Arizona on Thursday. Torrey Mitchell and Paul Byron also scored for Montreal, which has not lost in regulation through its first five games (4-0- 1). As long as Price is in net, go Habs on NHL odds.
