Euro Predictions For Round of 16 Match Ups

Written by on June 23, 2016

The final round of games in the group stages were what finally brought this tournament to life. The move by UEFA to put 24 teams in the tournament instead of the traditional 16 seemed like a poor one early on, but with 4 3rd place spots up for grabs in the group stages, things really did explode in the final set of games. There were some surprises to be sure, and we now have a Round of 16 that offers up the possibility of a surprise team making it all the way to the final. One side of the draw is filled with former Euro and World champions, while the other is a little lightweight. We will take a look at the soccer betting odds and ways to play in another article, but for now, let’s make some predictions for the Round of 16.

Lets Review the Euro Round of 16 Betting Predictions

Switzerland Vs Poland – Saturday, June 25 at 9 AM EST

Poland did well to finish behind Germany in the group stages, and they have been rewarded with what looks like a very winnable game on paper. The Swiss have not really impressed to this point, and you have to like Poland’s chances of moving on. Switzerland 0 Poland 2

Wales Vs Northern Ireland – Saturday, June 25 at 12 PM EST

Gareth Bale has been outstanding for the Welsh, scoring 3 goals and leading his team to the top of their group. Northern Ireland are the surprise package here, and while they have been a nice story, I just don’t see any way they get past Wales. Wales 3 Northern Ireland 1

Croatia Vs Portugal – Saturday, June 25 at 3 PM EST

Other than a late collapse against the Czech Republic, Croatia looked very good in the group stages. Portugal huffed and puffed their way through, tying all 3 games, and having to come back 3 different times against Hungary in order to get through. This is a tough match-up that could go either way. Croatia 1 Portugal 2

France Vs Republic of Ireland – Sunday, June 26 at 9 AM EST

The hosts breezed through their group, with Dimitri Payet pulling all the strings. Ireland had to rely on a late Robbie Brady goal versus Italy to punch their ticket, although it has to say that their win came against a weakened Italian side. End of the road for the plucky Irish. France 2 Republic of Ireland 0

Germany Vs Slovakia – Sunday, June 26 at 12 PM EST

The Germans have been more efficient than brilliant, but this is how they tend to go when playing in a major tournament. This match-up against a rather poor Slovakia team should be little more than a bump in the road that leads to the quarter finals for Germany. Germany 3 Slovakia 0

Hungary Vs Belgium – Sunday, June 26 at 3 PM EST

Hungary were one of the more fun teams to watch in the group stages, as they played a wide open style of football that was highly entertaining. That style could prove to be a problem against a Belgium team that can carve opponents open. Hungary 1 Belgium 2

Italy Vs Spain – Monday, June 27 at 12 PM EST

No question that this is the game of the Round of 16, and it’s a little unfortunate that it comes this early in the tournament. This should be a tight one, given how solid both teams are on defense. It may well be a single goal that wins it. Italy 0 Spain 1

England Vs Iceland – Monday, June 27 at 3 PM EST

No-one expected the tiny nation of Iceland to do anything other than show up, but they were magnificent in the group stages. England have a talented young team, but they have struggled to impress so far. The English should still be the betting line favorites for this one. England 2 Iceland 1
