This is one of the best times of the year to be a sports fan, as there is just so much exciting stuff going on. The baseball season is in the home stretch, football and hockey are right around the corner, and the US Open takes center stage at Flushing Meadow in New York. As majors go, the US Open has to be considered perhaps the most exciting of the four, simply because you get the excitement of seeing games go under the lights, which oftentimes means staying up until the early hours of the morning in order to catch the end of a 5-set classic. The first round action gets underway on Monday, August 29th, and we shouldn’t really expect to see any major surprises. Let’s take a look ahead to see what we might expect from the men’s and women’s tournament, as well as looking at the betting odds of the favorites.

2016 Men’s US Open Betting Predictions

If you go by the betting odds alone, it would seem that no-one on the men’s side are going to be able to touch Novak Djokovic (EV), the favorite to win it all, and Andy Murray (+125), who is having quite the unforgettable summer. Djokovic is going to be looking for some redemption after a performance at Wimbledon that was truly sub-par. He went out early, and then had to sit back and watch Murray plow through the field on the way to the championship. The Scotsman followed up that win by taking the gold at the men’s Olympic tournament in Rio.While this tournament seems to be set up nicely for these two guys, they are going to have some tough matches along the way. Canadian Milos Raonic (+1400) lost in the Winbledon final, and looks set to have a major breakout year. There is a very good chance that Djokovic may have to face Rafael Nadal (+2250) along the way, and while the Spaniard has fallen off a little due to injury, he still poses a legitimate threat. This is the year of Andy Murray, and I like him to get the win.

2016 Women’s US Open Betting Predictions

Serena Williams (+125) has dominated the women’s game for as long as anyone can remember, but 2016 has seen her start to slip a little. The US Open was wee her dream of a calendar Grand Slam came to an end, and she has only won two singles titles since that time, with Wimbledon being one of them. She has made it to the final of every Grand Slam event this year, but there are signs that she may be vulnerable.Angelique Kerber (+700) is perhaps the biggest threat to Williams, and with a win here, she would take over the number one spot that Serena has held for 187 consecutive weeks.  Simona Halep (+700) and Garbine Muguruza (+900) are also considered threats, and it is the latter of those two who I believe will make some real noise in this tournament. If Serena’s shoulder holds up, she will win, but that’s a pretty big if right now, as she was forced to withdraw from her last event a couple of weeks ago. I would play Muguruza if you fancy a little bit of a longshot.
