2019 Australian Open Men’s Singles Semifinals Preview

Novak Djokovic vs Lucas Pouille

Ranked 31st in the world, Pouille was magnificent in the quarterfinals against heavily favored Raonic. Milos went off at more than -600 while Pouille offered odds higher than +400. He jumped on Raonic in the first set, winning 7-6 (7-4). From then, it was all over for the favored player. Does Pouille have a shot at upsetting the great Novak Djokovic on Thursday?

Nope. Although Pouille played well enough to beat Raonic, he struggled in the match. Raonic forced 4 sets. 2 of the sets had to go into tiebreaker sets. Pouille should be tired. Even if he went into this match fresh, he’d have trouble versus the number 1 ranked player on the ATP.

Novak Djokovic beats players like Pouille with one eye closed. Unless Djoker’s not 100%, he’ll get the job done on Thursday.

2019 Australian Open Mens Semifinals Pick: Novak Djokovic

Stefanos Tsitsipas +455 vs Rafael Nadal -610

Ranked number 15, Stefanos Tsitsipas has arguably been the most impressive tennis player on either the men’s or women’s sides during the Australian Open. Tsitsipas had to beat three ranked opponents just to make it to the semis.

He took down 19 Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4. Just in the quarterfinals, he beat 22 Roberto Batista Agut 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). But although beating Agut was impressive, it wasn’t nearly as impressive as taking down Roger Federer 6-7 (11-13), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). Beating a legend like Federer gives Tsitsipas a shot against Nadal.

Rafa hasn’t lost a set yet during the Australian Open, though. He’s also only gone to a single tiebreaker set. Tsitsipas has a shot. However, we should expect way higher odds than +455 before biting.
