The first week of the US Open has come and gone and left us with a multitude of memorable moments. Nobody expected Serena Williams to win the US Open in her swan song, but she gave the New York crowd two impressive wins and had a great last dance against Alja Tomljanovic in the third round.
While several favorites are left in the women’s draw, we’re now without Maria Sakkari, Simona Halep, and Naomi Osaka, all of whom were among the top 10 betting favorites to win. Past US Open champions Bianca Andreescu and Emma Raducanu are also eliminated.
World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev is out in the men’s draw after losing to Nick Kyrgios for the second time in less than a month. Other favorites, including Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime, are also out of the tournament. Ilya Ivashka is perhaps the biggest surprise among players still in the men’s draw and could keep things going against the highly favored Jannik Sinner. Sinner has had a relatively easy path thus far, scoring victories over Brandon Nakashima, Christopher Eubanks, and Daniel Altmaier. Ivashka, the world No. 73, has picked up impressive wins over Lorenzo Musetti, Hubert Hurkacz, and Sam Querrey.
Sinner has the better serve, but Ivashka is the better returner, so this should be a battle of contrasting styles. Ivashka has 165 winners through three matches compared to Sinner’s 145 winners. They’ve never played each other on the ATP Tour, so this could be a good opportunity to go with Ivashka in the upset.
- Matteo Berrettini (+100) vs Casper Ruud (-125)
Although Casper Ruud is the betting favorite, Matteo Berrettini should have the edge in what will be the sixth meeting between the two players in Tuesday’s quarter-final. Berrettini won their only match on hard court at last year’s US Open (6-4, 6-4, 6-2).
Ruud has also been fortunate to have a relatively easy path through the first four rounds, yet needed five sets in his last two victories over Tommy Paul and Corentin Moutet. Berrettini defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in five sets in the fourth round and has also beaten Andy Murray, Hugo Grenier, and Nicolas Jarry.

American Danielle Collins and Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka will be under the lights on Monday night as both players hope to advance to the quarter-finals. Sabalenka is 3-0 against Collins, but how much of a factor will the crowd be?
