We are fresh off another big weekend in the world of the UFC, with the latest version of Fight Island now in the books. We will talk more about the results there and what that means going forward a little later in this piece, but we have plenty of other news to get to ahead of that, starting with some information about Conor McGregor and his next appearance in the UFC. UFC Betting News & Rumors Update (Oct. 19th)
Given that McGregor is arguably the biggest name in the sport, it seems only right that we get things started with his news. It has been announced that the Irishman will take on Dustin Poirier next January, with some suggesting that the fight might go off as a welterweight bout. While the January 23, although the exact location is yet to be decided. Word is that McGregor would like to fight at AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys, but that is a detail that is yet to be ironed out. For now, images of McGregor training for this fight are beginning to come out, and it must be surprising for some to see the Irishman with a shaved head and his iconic beard gone. Still, it’s great to see him back in action.
Speaking of big fights on the horizon, we need to talk about Khabib Nurmagomedov and his upcoming bout with Justin Gatheje next weekend. Talking about the fight, which is a lightweight unification title bout, Nurmagomedov floated the idea of potentially retiring with a perfect 30-0 record. Of course, he need to win this one, as well as one more after that, to reach that mark, but it does make you wonder who he would take on next if he gets the win next weekend. Nurmagomedov has always expressed a desire to fight Georges St. Pierre, but making that one happen is probably easier said than done.
A lot of people had counted Brian Ortega out heading into Fight Island last weekend, but he was absolutely clinical in a dominating win over Chan Sung Jung. From the moment he landed a spinning elbow blow to the face in the second round, Ortega took total control and cruised to a victory. The performance was so good that UFC higher-ups have already determined that Ortega’s next fight will be a title shot against Alex Volkanovski. We will wait until that bout is signed and sealed before we start getting too excited about the prospect of that battle.
We cannot close out this week’s news without talking about another fight that took place on Fight Island over the weekend. Jessica Andrade made the move to the flyweight division and immediately put herself in title contention with a dominating opening round KO of Katlyn Chookagian. While not yet officially announced, the belief is that Andrade will now be next in line to face the winner if the title fight between Jennifer Maia and Valentina Shevchenko, which will be held at UFC 255.
