Written by on October 26, 2020

There is a lot going on in the world of MMA today, but most of the rumors and news making the headlines are all about one specific thing. Khabib Nurmagomedov extended his unbeaten streak to 29 fights on Saturday, but it is what happened after the fight that got the rumor mill rolling. In his after fight interview, Khabib announced his retirement from the UFC, a decision that took many by surprise when you consider that he has just recently said that he liked the idea of retiring after hitting 30-0. When you look at those two statements together, you do have to wonder if he could be lured out of retirement if the right person came along. That said, let’s have a closer to Khabib’s announcement and what’s next so you can get ready your bets against our UFC odds.

One fight that would make sense and perhaps get Khabib back in the octagon would be a matchup against Georges St-Pierre. Remember, when GSP announced his retirement a few years back, it was Khabib who approached him and suggested he reconsider. When asked about the possibility of doing the same and then stepping back into the octagon with Khabib, GSP said that it is something that he would certainly consider. That said, he also believes that the champ is making the right decision by retiring, so I’m not so sure we should be holding our breath waiting for this bout.

Khabib retiring has thrown the lightweight division into a bit of a tizzy, with several fighters likely believing that they have what it takes to be the next champion. How all of this plays out is up to Dana White and the UFC brass, but there are some who believe that the January bout between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier will become a fight for the belt. Then again, the fight between Tony Ferguson and Michael Chandler is another one that could fit the bill. For his part, Chandler would like to see a tournament style battle for the belt, featuring him and the three other fighters mentioned here.

Looking ahead to a December 19 bout, we have seen the odds flipped on the fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Leon Edwards. After having some issues trying to put together an opponent for Chimaev, the UFC were finally able to get Edwards to sign on, with the bookies quickly making him the favorite to win. The betting public did not seem to be in agreement with that analysis, though, as they have now flipped the script and moved Chimaev to the favorite position. It’ll be interesting to see how the odds move in the weeks leading up to that bout.

We are going to close out this week’s news and rumors on a bit of a lighter note. Within minutes of Khabib retiring, fighters and fans were quick to pronounce the champ as the pound for pound GOAT. It seems that one person was not on board with that, though, as Jon Jones took to Twitter to go on an absolutely epic rank about his accomplishments and his place in the pecking order. If you haven’t seen the, you really should take a look, as his original complimentary tone quickly took a wild left turn.
