Poirier should enter the Octagon a slight favorite

In the first bout, way back in 2014, Conor McGregor totally outclassed Poirier. The fight ended up one-sided with McGregor ending Poirier’s night in the first-round.

At UFC 178, Poirier versus McGregor wasn’t even the main event. Since the first fight, Conor has stepped into the Octagon 9 times. He’s won 6 and lost 3.

The last loss happened at UFC 257 in January this year, and, yep, Dustin Poirier handed McGregor the loss. McGregor couldn’t handle Poirier’s striking as the champ sent Conor to the showers after a Round 2 flurry.

Heading into the third-fight, many believe Poirier repeats the effort. But as of July 6, Dustin is a slight -130 favorite. The odds on McGregor are +105.

There’s a good chance the fighters end up at -110. Based on repeat viewings of the third boutl, where Conor was the more aggressive fighter, the same odds on both to win makes the most sense.

Other great fights on the main card, including Burns versus Thompson

13-1 Sean O’Malley versus 9-4 Kris Moutinho is the first fight on the main card. Most every mixed-martial-arts fan on the planet is wondering why Dana White would pair a fighter of O’Malley’s caliber against someone like Moutinho, who has never fought at the UFC level.

Moutinho has no shot, but after O’Malley dominates Moutinho, three excellent matches, Irene Aldana versus Yana Kunitskaya, Tai Tuivasa against Greg Hardy, and Gilbert Burns taking on Sean Thompson, happen before Poirier throws down against McGregor. 

All three matches are competitive. In fact, outside of O’Malley at -800, there isn’t a single favorite on the main card, including Poirier, who offers lower odds than -160.

Prelims and early prelims should provide awesome UFC betting action

UFC 264’s first fight is at 6:00pm ET on Saturday. If possible, MMA fans should check out every fight.

The first bout, Hu Yaozong versus Alen Amedovski, should be awesome. Most of the fights should be awesome. Of the 13 bouts, only 3 show favorites that offer odds of -200 or less.

We discussed O’Malley versus Moutinho. The other big time chalks are Ilia Topuria at -230 to beat Ryan Hall and Zhalgas Zhumagulov at -360 against Jerome Rivera. 

Competitive fights often mean upsets. When upsets happen in the UFC, and they seem to happen way more in MMA than in boxing, combat sports handicappers make money.
