The Gonet Geneva Open, an ATP 250 event, began on Sunday with the end of qualification play and early first-round matches. The clay court tournament, held every year at Tennis Club de Genève at the Parc des Eaux-Vives, is one of two ATP tournaments being played this week, with the French Open beginning next week.
Casper Ruud, the two-time defending champion, headlines the field and is the No. 1 seed. There are some other fairly big names in the tournament, while two-time champion and Switzerland native Stan Wawrinka is a notable absence.
Let’s take a look at the updated ATP odds for the 2023 Gonet Geneva Open and some of the first-round odds at MyBookie.

Ruud Looking to Win Third Consecutive Title
As the top seed in the tournament, Ruud receives a bye into the second round and will play the winner of J.J. Wolf and Hugo Dellien Jr. He has a fairly easy draw to the semifinals, where he could match up against German Alexander Zverev, who is looking to gain momentum heading toward the French Open – he injured his ankle in the semifinals last year at Roland Garros and was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
Ruud, 24, is a somewhat disappointing 11-9 this season and is coming off of a semifinal loss to Dane Holger Rune at the Italian Open. He lost his Round of 64 match the week prior in Madrid. It was Ruud’s first loss to Rune in five matches. Ruud is 10-4 on clay this season and has a 67.6 percent winning percentage on the surface.
Other Challengers
Zverev is the biggest challenge to Ruud winning his second title of the season. The talented German is 6-4 on clay this season. He and Ruud are the only players born after 1995 to record 100 career clay court victories on the ATP Tour.
Zverev hasn’t quite returned to form since his ankle injury last year, however. He was a career-best world No. 2 last June but is now ranked No. 22 and hasn’t won a tournament this season. Taylor Fritz might be a more realistic option to take down Ruud, although they won’t meet until the finals.
Fritz, the world No. 9, is 27-9 this season. He reached the Round of 16 in Madrid two weeks ago and had reached at least the quarter-finals in each of his last seven tournaments. He won the ATP 250 event in Delray Beach in February.
Longshot Picks
Anything can happen in these short one-week tournaments. That’s why it doesn’t hurt to sprinkle some action on longshot picks for outright betting. There are a few decent selections in Geneva, the most attractive of which is Roberto Carballés Baena.
Baena, a 30-year-old Spaniard, has 19 career ITF titles and two ATP titles, both of which were on clay. He’s 10-7 on clay this season and has a career winning percentage of 62.7 on the surface. He’ll play a qualifier in the first round and will meet fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov if he advances.
