Bellator 296: Mousasi vs. Edwards Betting Odds to Win the Bout

Bellator 296: Mousasi vs. Edwards Betting Odds to Win the Bout

Gegard Mousasi is hoping to find a way to quickly bounce back from a disappointing middleweight title loss in June to Johnny Eblen. Mousasi had previously defended his title twice with back-to-back TKO wins over Austin Vandeford and John Salter. Now, Mousasi will be challenged with trying to take out Fabian Edwards.

Edwards, an English fighter, is coming off a two-fight win streak that included a decision win over Charlie Ward last October. Edwards doesn’t have a long resume against top competition. Edwards is 11-2 in his career and is likely best known for being the younger brother of UFC Welterweight champion Leon Edwards.

For Bellator 296, we have a middleweight title eliminator and a Bellator Lightweight World Grand Prix quarterfinal bout as the highlight of the night, also, find the top Bellator lines for each bout, Let’s dive in and take a closer look at the fights.

Mousasi at Home in Bellator

Since leaving the UFC, Mousasi has twice won the Bellator middleweight championship and defended the belt three times during his two stints. Mousasi is 7-2 in the promotion and 49-8-2 in his career. At age 37, Mousasi is a strong striker and leans on his kickboxing background.

Mousasi has won 28 of his progressional wins by knockout and 12 by submission. When fights go to the cards, Mousasi has a 9-4-2 record. Mousasi has won four of his past five fights, including the last two by knockout.

Mousasi is hoping a win can propel him toward another title shot. He lost the title in his last fight with Eblen. Mousasi struggled to handle Eblen’s wrestling and was ultimately worn down during a five-round decision.

Escaping His Brother’s Shadow

Edwards, who is only one year younger than his more accomplished brother, has half as many fights on his resume. So far in his MMA career, Edwards has won 11 of his 13 bouts by finish. Edwards is still relatively new to the professional circuit.

He signed with Bellator in 2017 after working as a janitor and carpenter while training. Edwards didn’t quit being a janitor until he signed with Bellator. Edwards would then hit the regional circuit for a few years before settling into the main roster in 2019.

Edwards has two professional losses to Austin Vanderford and Costello van Steenis. Edwards has never been finished in his professional career. Vanderford also recently fought Mousasi, but Mousasi won via first-round knockout.

The veteran Mousasi is a -286 favorite, according to Bellator odds. Edwards is +205.

Bellator 296 Prediction

Mousasi is getting long in the tooth, but has been active and was a strong champion for the promotion. This is a step down in competition for him. While Edwards has shown flashes of potential, he doesn’t have too many tools that Mousasi hasn’t seen before.

Expect Mousasi to be able to edge out a tight striking affair. This fight will likely hit the scorecards, and that’s where Mousasi will have a comfortable advantage. Edwards still has plenty of time to grow, but this won’t be the stage where he leaves his mark on the MMA scene.
