Not every traditional college football power can be Ohio State or Alabama. Those two teams have dominated their conferences for decades. So it goes without saying that some storied college football programs will fall apart this season. Check out seven programs, three play in the Pac-12, that will struggle during the 2022 NCAAF season so you can plan your bets against the NCAAF Odds.
Storied College Football Programs that Will Struggle in 2022
2022 NCAA Division I College Football Season
- When: August 27, 2022 – Dec. 10, 2022
The Louisiana State Fighting Tigers should be in some trouble
Brian Kelly, like so many before him, believes he can take his brand of college football coaching to the SEC and find success. Few coaches have.
The SEC is like no other conference in college football. Nothing comes close to coaching talent, player talent, recruiting, nothing. Not only that, but once conference play starts, LSU tackles teams like Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and Texas A&M every season.
Kelly’s going to miss coaching against teams like Navy, North Carolina, BYU, and Syracuse, some of Notre Dame’s usual opponents. Don’t be surprised if LSU wins no more than 6 games this season.
Auburn could win 4 to 6 games but that’s it
The Tigers will struggle against every SEC team they face except for maybe Missouri. If we say Auburn beats LSU, and they could because Kelly could fail big time, then Auburn wins 6 games.
But if LSU and Mizzou pull off upset victories, Auburn might not win more than 4 games. Bryan Harsin, like Brian Kelly, came from outside the SEC.
In his first season at Auburn, Harsin went 6-7. But that was with the previous regime’s recruits. This season, Harsin must win with his recruits and his transfers. That won’t be easy.
Oklahoma does not look like the best in the Big 12
After leaning for years on Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma brought in Clemson defensive coordinator Brett Venables to maintain the Sooners’ excellence. Will it work?
The thinking here, is no, it won’t. The problem? Venables failed to convince Heisman Trophy contender Caleb Williams, or almost every other important player on Oklahoma’s roster, not to follow Riley to USC.
Venables is starting from scratch. Texas and Baylor should dominate the Big 12. Oklahoma could be in for a disappointing season.
Clemson has a lot to prove
Clemson lost just 3 games last season. But for the Clemson Tigers, 3 losses is a big deal. So how does Deebo Samuel turn things around?
More importantly, can he? Brett Venables and Clemson’s defense held the Tigers together while the offense struggled big time.
Venables is now in Norman, Oklahoma. So what will keep Clemson at the top of the ACC? Nothing. The offense should be as bad this season as it was last season.
D.J. Uagielelei doesn’t appear to have improved. Also, D.J. doesn’t have many weapons. The offensive line is a mess. Clemson could lose just 3 games again but that’s because the ACC should remain a mediocre football conference.
Oregon, UCLA, and Washington will struggle now that USC is a CFP contender
Lincoln Riley took the USC job, transferred all of Oklahoma’s good players to Trojan Nation, and is ready to take USC to the College Football Playoff in his first season.
USC’s gain is Oregon’s UCLA’s and Washington’s losses. The Ducks must play with a new head coach, Washington isn’t a very good program, and Chip Kelly at UCLA is going through the motions.
The Trojans will rule the Pac-12. Oregon, UCLA, and Washington will struggle.
