The FIBA World Cup is beginning the final of group play. What that means is that countries are trying to position themselves for the knockout stage by knocking off their opponents.

The Canadians have rolled through their first two games in the World Cup. Canada has defeated France and Lebanon by a combined 85 points. RJ Barrett led the onslaught for the Canadians in their last game against Lebanon.
Canada set a new tournament record with 44 assists in the game and promises to give many teams issues with their ball improvement.
Latvia is going to need a superhuman performance to beat the Canadians to win Group H. The Latvians moved to 2-0 in the tournament when they shocked France, 88-86, during their last game. Forwards Arturs Zagas (22 points) and Rolands Smiths (20) each topped 20 points for Latvia.
Canada has too much balance in its scoring lineup for Latvia to keep up. The Canadians will likely cover the spread in this one.

Jonas Valanciunas and Rokas Jokubaitis led the Lithuanians to a big 30-point win over Mexico by scoring 15 points apiece. Montenegro was steady against Egypt last time out, shooting 50 percent from the field in a 15-point win over Egypt.
Nikola Vucevic has been playing as an excellent center for Montenegro. Vucevic has scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds. These teams should move the ball up and down the floor and put on a close game.

Japan vs. Australia

Australia and Japan are battling for second place in Group E. Both took losses to Germany, but Australia was much more competitive, only losing 85-82.
Australia will be disappointed with their performance against Germany when they were outscored by seven points in the fourth quarter and ended up losing by three.
The Australians have NBA talent to lean on to help with their scoring. Guard Patty Mills finished with 21 points, six assists, and five rebounds against Germany.
Japan was able to bounce back from its loss to Germany by upending Finland 98-88. The Japanese have been leaning on Josh Hawkinson, an American-born Japanese professional basketball player, to lead the team.
Hawkinson led the team with 28 points and 19 rebounds against Finland. Hiroktaka Yoshii has also been a strong scorer for Japan, putting up 25 points and nine assists against Finland.
