Three Races on the Preakness Undercard You Should Handicap

Chick Lang Stakes | Grade 3 – Race 6

Distance/Surface: 6 furlongs over dirt
When: at 1:29pm ET

Analysis: Bob Baffert trained Havnameltdown has never finished worse than second in any lifetime race. For sure, the Baffert charge is going to offer odds less than the 8/5 morning line.

Although Havnameltdown can win this, Super Chow will ensure a fast pace. A fast pace should benefit cut backer Frosted Departure. The Ken McPeek trained runner bobbled and then bumped at the start in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile in the last, but the top pick still managed to finish fourth behind General Jim, Fort Bragg, and Gilmore.

Frosted Departure runs down the two chalks late. Havnameltdown will keep her first or second record intact. Super Chow should hang on for third.

Gallorette Stakes | Grade 3 – Race 7

Distance/Surface: 1 1/8 miles over turf
When: at 2:49 pm ET

Analysis: It’s going to be tough for any runner to beat Chad Brown trained White Beam. The Brown horse finished second by a neck in the Plenty of Grace Stakes at Aqueduct in her very first start. White Beam is 3-2-1 from 7 lifetime starts. Brown often gets them to improve second time stateside. Give the morning line favorite a big chance.

Princess Theorem rates the second choice. Sure, the Brendan Walsh trained 5-year-old mare ran in an optional claiming $25,000 in her last. But after Walsh moved her up in class, she responded with a third-place length loss in the Grade 3 Honey Fox and a second-place by a neck in the Sand Springs.

Of the two Graham Motion runners, first time in the states Sopran Basilea is the more preferred over Vergara. Motion only wins 6% first time in the U.S. But his runners finish in the money 53%. Sopran is a must use on the exotic tickets.

Dinner Party Stakes | Grade 3 – Race 8

Distance/Surface: 1 1/8 miles over turf
When: at 2:49 pm ET

Analysis: Joel Rosario picks up the mount on Graham Motion trained Hurricane Dream. The Motion horse bombed bad in the first race in the U.S., finishing tenth in the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational.

Motion, like what’s written above, wins 6% first time in the U.S, which explains the improvement in the last race, a 4-length win in a $140,000 allowance win at Keeneland. The top choice looks formidable.

Emanuel could be tough to keep out of the exacta. Todd Pletcher makes the jock switch from Javier Castellano to Irad Ortiz. Javier is a great jockey but Irad might fit the More Than Ready sired colt better. If Emanuel gets an easy lead, or a cozy spot right behind the front runners, a win is possible.

Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational winner Atone can win this for sure. But the morning line odds, 9/5, makes the PWCTI winner an underlay. The favorite, though, is a must use.
