Astros vs Giants MLB Odds & Expert Betting Prediction

Written by on August 7, 2018

The best pitching matchup on paper around the majors on Tuesday is a matinee when former World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner face the fellow lefty and former AL Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel on Astros vs Giants in San Francisco. Houston will lose the designated hitter for this interleague matchup and it’s one of the smallest totals on the Mybookie Sportsbook betting board for Tuesday.

Top MLB Betting Picks of the Week – August 6th Edition

Why Bet on Houston?

The Astros won’t be at full strength because they placed 2017 World Series MVP George Springer on the 10-day disabled list Monday. Springer hurt his left thumb on a headfirst slide into second base Sunday on what resulted in a caught stealing to end the third inning. The Dodgers’ Chris Taylor’s glove clipped Springer’s hand, causing him to double over in pain and walk off alongside a trainer. Springer, a two-time All-Star, entered the game batting .248/.333/.428 with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs. The injury is being called a sprain with Springer likely to miss two weeks. Derek Fisher has been recalled from Triple-A to take his spot on the active roster. Tony Kemp could see an uptick of at-bats out of the leadoff spot. The Astros remain without second baseman and reigning AL MVP Jose Altuve and you won’t see him in this series. Also out are shortstop Carlos Correa, catcher Brian McCann and starting pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. Correa is close to returning but it’s not clear if that will happen by Tuesday. It’s lefty Dallas Keuchel (9-9, 3.61) on the mound here. Keuchel picked up the win Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out two in an 8-3 victory over the Mariners. The Astros gave Keuchel plenty of run support, but the southpaw still came through with his fifth quality start in his last six outings and 14th of the season. Keuchel has been the Astros’ most consistent starter the past six weeks, going 6-1 with a 2.37 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in his past nine starts. He’s allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight of his past nine starts. The Astros have been the top road team in the Majors, as their 39-17 (.696) road record is the best in baseball. The Astros are making a run at the all-time best road winning percentage, as their .696 mark would rank fourth all-time and is the best since the 2001 Mariners went 59-22 (.728) on the road. Reliever Héctor Rondón has been scoreless in all 21 of his road appearances this season (20.1 IP), which is the third-longest road scoreless appearance streak in club history.

Why Bet on San Francisco?

The Giants remain without closer Hunter Strickland, although he began a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with the Giants’ Arizona League rookie affiliate. Strickland gave up an unearned run on two hits while striking out two batters in his one inning of work. He’s on the 60-day disabled list, so he’s still not eligible to return until Aug. 19. Strickland broke his pitching hand in June after punching a door in frustration following a poor performance. Frankly, Smith hasn’t been missed much as Will Smith has been good in his spot. Smith slammed the door on the Diamondbacks in the ninth inning on Sunday, protecting a one-run edge to earn his seventh save of the season. Smith retired the Diamondbacks in order, getting Nick Ahmed on a ground ball then mowing down Jon Jay and A.J. Pollock to end the game. He has solidified the Giants’ closer’s role in the wake of Hunter Strickland’s injury. He boasts a 1.27 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 50/7 K/BB ratio over 35 1/3 innings on the season. Catcher Buster Posey (head) passed his concussion test and was cleared to start at first base Sunday. It’s not clear if he will OK’d to catch yet, though. Astros vs Giants is going to be one of the best games scheduled for Tuesday Night. It’s lefty Madison Bumgarner (4-4, 2.97) on the mound. Bumgarner allowed one earned run on seven hits and three walks while striking out five across five innings to earn the win Thursday against the Diamondbacks. Bumgarner allowed 10 baserunners but managed to limit the damage by stranding nine runners on base. Still, he generated only 11 swinging strikes on 101 total pitches and allowed the Diamondbacks to foul off 29 pitches. Bumgarner has struggled to put away hitters all season — he has just a 7.5 K/9 mark – and an unusual 3.7 BB/9 through 66.2 innings. Bumgarner will face the Astros for the first time since 2015 when he struck out 12 in a complete game five-hitter at AT&T Park. Prior to that, he made two starts against them in 2012. He is 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA against them.
