Why Bet on Oakland?

The A’s enter this series off being swept three games in Houston over the weekend. Jose Altuve drew a four-pitch walk from Athletics closer Blake Treinen with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of Sunday’s game.

Oakland manager Bob Melvin expressed frustration that his team’s schedule is lacking any days off from March 28-April 14, which has led to stress on the bullpen.

“My concern is 18 in a row. It’s really not that fair to start the season like that,” he said. “Starters are not stretched out when the season starts … it’s a challenge.”

Before Sunday, Treinen hadn’t allowed a run this season and had a streak of 24.0 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run dating back to Aug. 23, 2018. Matt Chapman has reached base safely in 10 of 11 games in which he has batted this year. Khris Davis is T2nd in the Majors with five home runs and has 138 home runs over the last four years, which is 14 more than any other player (Giancarlo Stanton, 124).

It’s lefty Brett Anderson for Oakland. Anderson allowed three earned runs over 5 1/3 innings in his most recent outing vs. the Red Sox on April 4, walking four batters while recording three strikeouts. Anderson wasn’t very effective but was given enough run support to collect his second win of the season.

He got off to a tough start, allowing two earned runs and four batters to reach base in the first inning. The only damage from there was a solo home run by J.D. Martinez in the third, though he wasn’t able to pitch deep into the game after needing 101 pitches to cover 5.1 innings. Through two starts, Anderson has seven strikeouts and six walks across 11.1 innings. Anderson allowed four runs over 3 1/3 innings in his only outing vs. the Orioles in ’18.

Why Bet on Baltimore?

How freaking terrible is Orioles slugger Chris Davis? Davis was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Sunday’s 15-3 loss to the New York Yankees. He is 0-for-23 with 13 strikeouts this season (entering Monday) and is hitless in 44 at-bats since a second-inning double off James Shields of the Chicago White Sox last Sept. 14. Davis is two shy of the record for consecutive hitless at-bats by a position player. Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Eugenio Velez went hitless in his final 46 at-bats of the 2011 season.

Davis is in the fourth season of a $161 million, seven-year contract. He hit .168 last year, the worst batting average in major league history for a qualified player, with 16 home runs, 49 RBIs and a .539 OPS.

It’s lefty John Means on the mound. Means will enter the rotation in place of Nate Karns, who will move to the bullpen on an exclusive basis after previously serving as an opener for the Orioles. Manager Brandon Hyde likely felt Means warranted a look in a starting role on at least a short-term basis after the lefty struck out nine while allowing only one run over 5.2 innings across his first three appearances out of the bullpen.

It will be Means’ first major-league start after four relief appearances, though 114 of his 119 career minor-league appearance were starts. Hyde said there would be no innings restriction on Means.

“I’m gonna let Johnny pitch,” Hyde said. “I’ll be smart about it, but I’m looking forward to watch him start and taking it as far as he can go. Obviously, he’s been outstanding. Can pitch a variety of roles for you, so we’re gonna give him a start on Tuesday and see how it goes.”

Could be just the one start for Means as Dan Straily is expected to take the spot in the rotation. The team just signed him from the Marlins and Hyde first wants Straily to get a relief appearance or two before throwing him into the rotation.
