The Orioles had to be terrified when All-Star third baseman Manny Machado, the team’s best player, even with somewhat disappointing numbers, left Wednesday’s game vs. Pittsburgh. Machado was injured while attempting to apply a tag to Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen as he slid into third base. McCutchen accidentally spiked Machado’s left hand. Machado was looked at by trainers at the time but stayed in the game. He was eventually removed in the bottom of the third inning, as Ruben Tejada stood in the on-deck circle in Machado’s place. X-rays were negative, with Manager Buck Showalter saying Machado has a "pretty deep" cut on his hand and a “deep bruise.” He has also been diagnosed with a strained wrist, meaning the long-term prognosis is good, although he could miss at least a few games. Machado is batting .213 with 12 home runs and 27 RBIs. He is the leader in All-Star Game voting among AL third basemen. Yes, Machado has struggled offensively this season. But, given his track record, he’s not a player that opposing pitchers can take lightly. At any time, Machado is a threat to break out of his slump and re-emerge as a key cog in the lineup. Machado has been putting up another stellar defensive season at third base and likely will win another Gold Glove. That’s where the Orioles will most miss his presence if he’s out of commission. The Orioles could activate catcher Welington Castillo for this game. He was placed on the 10-day DL on May 31 after suffering a testicular injury the previous night on a deflected ball. He has been one of the Orioles’ most productive hitters, batting .317 with four home runs and 17 RBIs. It’s Chris Tillman on the mound. Tillman (1-3, 5.59) is still looking to find his way after spending the first month of the season on the disabled list. Tillman has not won since his first start on May 7, a span of five straight outings. The good news is Tillman averaged 91.4 mph on his fastball in last Sunday’s start, and was clocked at a season-high 94 mph during the outing. Tillman’s velocity has been trending up in each of his six starts. Closer Aroldis Chapman (left rotator cuff inflammation) is headed to the Yankees’ minor-league facility in Florida. If the all goes well, Chapman will appear in a rehab game with Double-A Trenton. Chapman said he believes he can return next week but said the weekend series in Oakland from June 16-18 is more realistic. First baseman Greg Bird (bruised right ankle) likely will beat Chapman back from the DL. He is rehabbing at Triple-A. The news isn’t so good for outfielder and leadoff man Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury was hurt when he crashed into the wall catching a drive by Kansas City’s Alcides Escobar on the first pitch of a game on May 24. He’s still dealing with some concussion-like symptoms. Ellsbury is batting .281 with four homers, 14 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 39 games. “The headaches have been gone at times, but it seems like when we start some activity they come back,” manager Joe Girardi said. It’s Luis Severino (4-2, 2.90) on the mound, and he has been the team’s second-best pitcher of late behind surging CC Sabathia. Severino has turned in three straight quality starts, including a victory over the Orioles on May 30 in Baltimore. He took a no-decision at Toronto last time out, allowing just a two-run homer over seven innings. Severino made one critical mistake, surrendering a two-out, two-run home run on a first-pitch slider that came back over the middle of the plate that Justin Smoak deposited into the flight deck in center field of the Rogers Centre that tied the game at 2-2. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Severino has mastered so much recently. He made 11 starts last season and was atrocious, going 0-8 with an 8.50 ERA: “The command of the fastball has been the big difference. And to his credit he has really worked at it.’’
