New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers Game 5 Preview

Thanks to a monster performance from Clayton Kershaw, the Dodgers secured a crucial 3-1 win in Game 4, tying up the series and forcing the series back to California. And as a result of that dominant show from Kershaw, we now have another dandy pitching matchup, featuring two of the best haulers in this generation in deGrom and Greinke. And going by the high-caliber nature of the two stars, this game will most likely be decided by the pitchers rather than the hitters. So which of the two starters is likely to deliver the W tonight? Well, starting with Possible Cy Young winner Greinke, his performance in the regular season was one for the record books. Sporting a 19-3 record, an MLB-best 1.66 ERA, along with 0.84 WHIP and 200 strikeouts in 222 2/3 innings, very few pitchers in the MLB compared to him. Even more notably, he had a better ERA at home (1.46) than on the road (1.88), which is a great boost for the Dodgers who will be playing at home today. And in his start against the Mets in Game 2. he gave up just two runs (both which came in the second inning) on just five hits, while impressively striking out eight and totaling zero walks. The Los Angeles offense also played its part on that day, totaling five runs to earn the Dodgers a 5-2 victory in LA. Comparably, deGrom also had a solid season, posting a 14-8 record with a 2.54 ERA to go along with 0.98 WHIP and 205 strikeouts in 191 innings. Unlike most aces that go cold in October, deGrom continued with his hot season, outpitching NL Cy Young hotshot Kershaw in Game 1 to give the Mets a 3-1 in Los Angeles. deGrom, the 2014 Rookie of the Year, was a beast in that Friday night opener, throwing seven scoreless frames and 13 K’s in a resounding performance on the mound. That Game 1 win was a continuation of his strong regular-season dominance over the Dodgers. In his last regular season game against the Dodgers on July 26th, which interestingly came against Greinke, deGrom was just as impressive, giving up just two hits (both being singles) while striking out eight over 7 2/3 scoreless innings to end Greinke’s shutout streak and give the Mets a 3-2 win. So, simply put, deGrom has owned the Dodgers this season, something he’ll be looking to continue tonight. In case you are wondering why we aren’t talking much about the two teams’ offensive units, it is simply because deGrom and Greinke are likely to control most of the proceedings, so the offenses won’t feature that much in this game. Still, it is worth noting that the Mets rank at No. 26 in getting on base at 8.31 hits per game, which is slightly better than the Dodgers who rank at No. 27 in that category. The Mets also rank 17th in the nation with 683 runs scored, while the Dodgers are 18th with 667 runs scored. Even so, the Dodgers finished the season with better numbers than the Mets in batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage. The offensive battle could thus go either way, of course with the Dodgers having some slightly edge in motivation since they’ll be playing in their own backyard.
