Padres vs.Phillies Game Three Betting Preview

Padres vs. Phillies Game Three Betting Preview

Written by on October 20, 2022

This entire 2022 MLB postseason has been unpredictable, and we have a very fun NLCS battle thus far. The San Diego Padres hit the road to take on the Philadelphia Phillies in game three of the NLCS at Citizens Bank Park.

Nobody really knew what to expect from this series. Every underdog has dominated the NL side so far, so I guess you would imagine the Phillies would continue that narrative, but the series is tied 1-1. Both teams will take the much-needed day off and prepare for the crucial game three Friday night.

Heartbreak in Philly

Early on in game two, it seemed like the Philadelphia Phillies had the number of the Houston Astros, but that quickly changed. That is the magic of baseball–and San Diego baseball in general–where the game is never over when you think it is.

After throwing their best two pitchers, things are getting dicey for the Phillies as they send Ranger Suarez to the mound. The LHP has pitched just 6.1 innings in two postseason starts, allowing seven earned runs and four home runs. That is a recipe for disaster against a San Diego offense that found its grove in game two.

Philadelphia has been above average when it comes to covering the spread at 83-79 in the regular season. Their over/under in the regular season was 79-75-7. The Phillies are a much better team at home on both the moneyline and against the spread. They are 64-47 during the night as well.

Keep the Bats Hot

All October long, fans have raved about how loud and wild Petco Park gets for the San Diego Padres. Friday night, they will have to try to take some of that energy with them to the other side of the country in Philadelphia.

Joe Musgrove will get the call on the mound in game three for the Padres. Musgrove was 10-7 in the regular season with a 2.93 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 184 strikeouts. Having Musgrove as a game-three pitcher seems almost unfair. Through his last six starts, the RHP has only allowed three earned runs.

Last game, we talked about how the Padres struggled against the spread during the day and at home, but now they are on the road playing at night. On the moneyline, the Padres are 66-44 at night and 48-38 on the road. San Diego embraces the road, and we should not slow down in their production on both sides of the ball.

In all of 2022, the Phillies hold a 5-4 lead in the season series over the Padres. It has been back and forth all year long, but a win tonight for the Padres could tie the series. As the series is tied at 1-1, game three is pivotal.

The Padres are favored even though they are on the road. The oddsmakers love Joe Musgrove and have their questions about Ranger Suarez, who does not pitch as well at Citizens Park. Betting the spread in October is always risky, but the Padres should take the series lead in game three.
