How to Bet Rockies vs Cardinals MLB Prediction

Written by on July 31, 2018

It’s two young, hard-throwing but inconsistent right-handers on the mound Tuesday night as Rockies vs Cardinals Game 2 unfolds. Jon Gray toes the hill for the Rockies and another former first-round pick, Jack Flaherty, does so for the Redbirds. They are slight Mybookie Sportsbook favorites.

Astros vs Mariners MLB Odds & Betting Pick – July 31st

Why Bet on Colorado?

One of the best free agent signings this offseason was the Rockies adding former Cubs closer Wade Davis. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his 30th save in the Rockies’ 3-2 win over the Athletics on Sunday as Colorado swept the previously red-hot A’s. Davis rattled off three consecutive scoreless appearances since his extra-innings meltdown on July 24. The 32-year-old is now tied for the National League lead in saves with Kenley Jansen. He’s 1-3 with a 4.30 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 44 innings of work this season. In Sunday’s win, Charlie Blackmon extended his hitting streak to 11 games. He’s batting .378 (17-for-45) with seven doubles and two home runs over the streak. Colorado won’t like leaving home as it went 12-2 at Coors Field in the month of July, a .857 winning percentage that ranks third all-time for a single month at home (minimum nine games). Rockies starters have posted a 1.71 ERA at home in the month of July, which is a franchise record for the lowest starter ERA in a single month at Coors Field (previous low, excluding Octobers: 2.80, May 2006). Over the weekend, the team signed a former fan favorite in outfielder Matt Holliday to a minor league contract. The 38-year-old has a long history with the Colorado organization, playing with the Rockies from 2004 to 2009. He spent last season with the Yankees, appearing in Game 1 of their ALCS loss to the Astros. Interesting choice as Holliday certainly enjoyed a great deal of success with the Rockies in the early 2000s, and the club is in need of corner outfielders, but Holliday was out of baseball to the point he was an analyst with MLB Network. Of the 20 series remaining in the Rockies season, 16 are against teams currently at or above .500, including each of the next eight series. It’s Jon Gray here. Gray (8-7, 5.16) allowed two runs (one earned) on two walks and a hit while striking out six over seven innings in Wednesday’s win over the Astros. He did not factor into the decision. Gray was terrific as the only hit he allowed was a Jose Altuve double in the fourth inning. An error and a catcher’s interference in the frame led to a pair of runs coming around to score, and the Colorado bats didn’t provide much in the way of run support. It appears that Gray’s brief demotion back to the minors has had the intended effect. In two starts since being called back up, Gray has allowed just two earned runs with 12 strikeouts versus three walks over 14.1 innings.

Why Bet on St. Louis?

The Cards tried to finish off a home sweep of the Cubs on Sunday night but lost 5-2. Jedd Gyorko (illness) went 1-for-4 with a single in his return to the starting lineup. He was a late addition to Sunday’s lineup after Jose Martinez was scratched. Gyorko was limited over the past week due to a viral illness. Martinez was scratched due to a sore ankle. Martinez sustained a minor ankle injury during Saturday’s game and interim manager Mike Shildt decided to hold him out due to his limited mobility. Matt Carpenter is tied for 2nd in the National League in home runs with 25 (Nolan Arenado, COL, 27). Carpenter is three shy of his career high of 28 home runs in 2015. He’s five shy of becoming the 15th Cardinals left-handed hitter to whack 30 home runs in a single season and the first since Jim Edmonds hit 42 in 2004. Carpenter’s 16 home runs hit on the road this season are tied with Khris Davis (OAK) for the Major League lead. Carpenter’s 10 home runs in July are the most in MLB. Since the beginning of the new century in 2001, the Cardinals’ .569 winning percentage post-All-Star Break is the best in the National League trailing only the New York Yankees (.594) in MLB. Rockies vs Cardinals on Tuesday Night is going to be pretty interesting. The Cards have placed setup man Luke Gregerson on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to July 26, with a right shoulder impingement. It’s the same injury that sent him to the DL earlier this season. Gregerson has also missed time with a strained hamstring and knee surgery. The Cards give the ball to 22-year-old Jack Flaherty (4-5, 3.28). Flaherty took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over five innings while striking out eight as the Cardinals fell 7-3 to the Reds. Spin: The right-hander continues to have trouble keeping the ball in the park, giving up two more homers to boost his HR/9 on the season to 1.4. The Cardinals lost six of the last seven games when Flaherty pitched, but it can’t all be pinned on the rookie. The right-hander wasn’t superb in June, but he kept the Cards close by notching 37 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings. It’s his first career look at Colorado.
