Sunday’s Top SU MLB Betting Picks & Predictions

Written by on July 21, 2017

Keep in mind that if you bet on a certain team this weekend that’s a seller ahead of the trade deadline that said team could sit a key player if he’s about to be traded. For example, if you bet on the White Sox Tuesday vs. the Dodgers you got the raw end of the deal as the Sox sat 3B Todd Frazier and their two best relievers ahead of a trade to the Yankees. Here are three MLB betting picks to place a straight-up wager for Sunday.

Sunday’s Top SU MLB Betting Picks & Predictions

Houston Astros at Baltimore Orioles

When: 1:35 PM ET Where: Camden Yards, Baltimore TV: TBS / ATT SportsNet-SW (Houston) / MASN (Baltimore) Stream: MLB.tv Radio: KBME 790 (Houston) / 105.7 The Fan (Baltimore) MLB Betting Odds: TBA Boston’s Chris Sale is going to win the AL Cy Young Award, but Houston youngster Lance McCullers Jr. looks like a future Cy winner. McCullers (7-2, 3.28) gets the call in this series finale. McCullers allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out five over 4.2 innings in Monday’s no-decision against the Mariners. McCullers failed to get through the fifth inning for the second consecutive outing, needing 95 pitches to record just 14 outs. The six runs were the most allowed by McCullers. The first-time All-Star had gone 2-0 with two runs allowed in his previous two starts against the Mariners. McCullers is 1-1 in his last four starts since coming off the DL on June 24. In that span, McCullers has an ERA of 6.05, allowing 15 runs and 25 hits in his last 19 1/3 innings.

Who Will Kick Off Sunday for Baltimore?

The Orioles go with their ace in Dylan Bundy (9-8, 4.18). Bundy tossed six innings of one-run ball during Tuesday’s win over the Rangers, allowing four hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Bundy allowed a leadoff home run to Shin-Soo Choo, but he settled down in short order and only allowed four baserunners over six full frames thereafter. He owed much of his success to his location, which included first-pitch strikes to 17 of 23 batters while 68 percent of his pitches found the strike zone. The righty has not been able to generate strikeouts consistently this season (6.95 K/9) as his velocity has tumbled, and his 46 percent fly-ball rate leaves him prone to homers (1.5 HR/9).

Atlanta Braves at LA Dodgers

When: 9:10 PM ET Where: Dodger Stadium TV: MLB Extra Innings / FSSO (Atlanta) / SportsNet LA (LA) Stream: MLB.tv Radio: 93.7 FM (Atlanta) / 570 LA Sports (LA) MLB Betting Odds: TBA Look, I’m not exactly telling you something you probably don’t know, but you should be betting the Dodgers whenever Clayton Kershaw is on the mound – the runline is likely your best value. He goes here in the series finale. Kershaw (15-2, 2.07) gave up seven hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings Tuesday in a 1-0 win over the White Sox. He struck out seven. Kershaw is the fifth pitcher in Dodgers history to win at least 15 of his first 17 decisions in one season, joining Joe McGinnity in 1900 (15-2), Freddie Fitzsimmons in 1940 (15-2), Preacher Roe in 1951 (15-2) and Don Newcombe in 1955 (16-1). Kershaw has won his last eight starts, matching the longest such streak of his major-league career. He won eight straight starts in 2014. It is also the longest streak of its kind in the majors this year.

Who Will Atlanta Counter With to Pitch Sunday?

The Braves counter with lefty Sean Newcomb (1-5, 4.86). He might be a future ace but has hit a rookie wall. Newcomb impressed through his first four career starts, but he has struggled with his command in his past three outings. Newcomb lost after giving up five runs on eight hits (two homers) and three walks with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings Tuesday against the Cubs. Making his seventh big-league start, Newcomb was done in by a four-run third inning. After logging four quality starts to begin his career (1.48 ERA), the southpaw has posted an 11.37 ERA in a tough stretch against the Astros, Nationals and Cubs.

Are the Braves a safe MLB betting pick for this Sunday?

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs

When: 8 PM ET Where: Wrigley Field TV: ESPN Stream: WatchESPN Radio: KMOX 1120 (St. Louis) / 670 The Score (Chicago) MLB Betting Odds: TBA It’s the ESPN Sunday Night Game of the Week between the arch-rival Cubs and Cards. What will Chicago lefty Jose Quintana do for an encore? Quintana (5-8, 4.20) made his Cubs debut off a trade from the White Sox last Sunday vs. Baltimore and he threw seven shutout innings and allowed three hits and struck out a season-high 12. Quintana had movement on all his pitches, especially his curveball. The 12 strikeouts were one off his career high, and combined with his 10 strikeouts in his previous start for the White Sox before the trade, he joined Randy Johnson as the only pitchers since 1900 to record double-digit strikeouts for two teams within the same season. While Quintana still carries a 4.20 ERA on the year, he’s posted a 2.30 mark since the start of June and owns a 3.73 FIP this season. Quintana is 0-1 in two career starts at Wrigley. He last pitched there on July 12, 2015.

What About the Cardinals’ Michael Wacha?

St. Louis’ Wacha (7-3, 3.71) went the distance against the Mets on Tuesday, striking out eight while allowing just three hits and a walk in a 5-0 win. It was Wacha’s first career complete game. After scuffling through his first 13 starts — 4.76 ERA, 1.51 WHIP — with only a few bright spots, Wacha has turned the corner over his last four outings. Wacha is 4-0 with a 1.01 ERA over this last four starts. It’s the second time in his career that Wacha earned a win in four consecutive starts; he also did it in April 2015 (4-0, 2.42 ERA). Wacha pitched at the Cubs on June 4 and was bombed for six runs and six hits, two homers, in 4.1 innings of a loss.

Final MLB Betting Predictions for Sunday

Of course bet Kershaw and the Dodgers, I do like Quintana as the Cardinals don’t know him. The toughest call is on the Astros-Orioles, but go Baltimore as a likely small dog as McCullers is struggling a bit at the moment.
