Why Bet on NY Yankees?
New York had a three-game winning streak end Wednesday in a 7-5 home loss to a bad Baltimore team. Rookie of the Year favorite Gleyber Torres hit two homers, his 16th, and 17th in the loss. It was second career multi-homer game. He and Joe DiMaggio are the only players in Yankees history to have multiple games in a season in which they’ve hit two or more homers before turning 22. The Yankees are 49-21 when Torres plays this season and 19-17 in games without him. Only 10 players who debuted since 1908 appeared in more team wins over their first 70 career games. One negative Wednesday was the continued struggles of Sonny Gray. By the third inning, new addition Lance Lynn was rushed in for his Yankees debut mid-inning due to Gray’s massive struggles in a 2 2/3-inning, a seven-run stinker that has his ERA up to 5.56. After Gray was booed off the field, Lynn’s opening act in pinstripes was impressive, as he worked 4 1/3 shutout innings in his first relief outing since September 2012. Lynn allowed five hits, struck out five and walked none in a 71-pitch outing. The Orioles are 6-6 against the Yankees and 27-69 against everyone else. The Yankees are 5-4 vs. the Red Sox in 2018. They are 19-12 in 31G vs. Boston since 9/27/16. It’s big lefty CC Sabathia (6-4, 3.53) for New York. Sabathia didn’t factor into the decision in a 5-4 win over the Royals during the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 innings while striking out eight. The former Cy Young winner hadn’t pitched in two weeks, but Sabathia looked solid until the fifth when he landed awkwardly on his right knee while attempting to field an infield hit. He remained in the game, but after issuing both his free passes to two of the next three batters, manager Aaron Boone elected to take no chances and lifted the southpaw after 79 pitches. The 38-year-old Sabathia has been a force against the Sox, particularly over the last two years. He has a 1.95 ERA in 37 innings against them since the start of 2017, and he’s allowed just one home run. In 41 career starts against Boston, Sabathia has gone 18-13 with a 4.12 ERA. He last faced the Red Sox on June 29, allowing just one run through seven frames.Why Bet on Boston?
Boston had a four-game winning streak end Tuesday in a 3-1 home loss to Philly and then was off Wednesday. Ian Kinsler singled in one of his four plate appearances in his Red Sox debut Tuesday. Starting at second base and batting sixth, Kinsler singled off of Jake Arrieta in the fourth inning for his first hit with his new club. He lined out and struck out twice in his other three trips to the plate. Kinsler will be the every-day guy at second because Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski said Tuesday that he does not anticipate Dustin Pedroia (knee) returning this season. Pedroia has appeared in only three games this season due to complications related to offseason knee surgery.
Meanwhile, shortstop Xander Bogaerts is day-to-day with a right-hand contusion. Bogaerts got hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of Tuesday night’s loss. X-rays turned up negative. J.D. Martinez leads the majors in RBI (89) and total bases (247) and is tied for the lead in HR (32). He also ranks among ML leaders in AVG (3rd, .322), SLG (2nd, .637), and OPS (4th, 1.024)
The Red Sox are hitting just .234 with a .691 OPS since the break. They’ve still won seven of those 11 games, and 19 of their last 24, largely due to their starting pitching, which had a historic run in which they’ve posted a 1.55 ERA in their last 13 games.
It was supposed to be Cy Young favorite Chris Sale here, but on Tuesday the Sox placed him the 10-day disabled list with mild left shoulder inflammation. Sale has been arguably the best starter in the majors this season, with an AL-best 2.04 ERA and an MLB-best 207 strikeouts in 141 innings. He is 5-0 in his last six starts, striking out at least nine in each, and hasn’t given up a run in his last three outings. Huge break for Boston.
Lefty Brian Johnson takes his place. The lefty has been solid every time the Red Sox have needed him as a starter this season. Johnson enters play with an 8.0-inning scoreless streak and has not allowed an ER in his last 12.1 IP. He is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA (6 ER/30.0 IP), 12 BB, 24 SO in six starts for BOS this year. In 21 relief outings this year: 0-2, 5.10 ERA (17 ER/30.0 IP), 8 BB, 28 SO.
