It feels as though the new season has just begun, but we are already 7 races deep, with the wins spread out across several different drivers. Interestingly enough, the man currently sitting at the top of the driver standings is yet to pick up a win this year, but we will get into that a little more once we start looking at the drivers and their odds for the Cook Out 400, which is set to go this Sunday at 3 PM EST. While it is certainly nice to win, the fact of the matter is that the regular season is all about picking up points regularly so that you can stay above the playoff cut line. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the drivers who might be worth wagering on in Martinsville on Sunday.

NASCAR Race Odds and Favorites to Win Cook Out 400

  • Denny Hamlin +425
  • Martin Truex Jr. +700
  • Christopher Bell +750
  • Ryan Blaney +800
  • Kyle Larson +850
  • Joey Logano +1000

Denny Hamlin

If you are looking to wager on a driver with the hot hand right now, you should probably give Hamlin a look. He did not perform particularly well through the opening couple of races of the season, but he appears to have now flipped the switch after winning 2 of the last 3 races. Those wins served as book ends to the road race at the Circuit of the Americas, which is always a more difficult challenge. In short, Hamlin has won each of the last 2 races taking place on the traditional oval tracks. What makes things even more convincing for Hamlin is that he was solid on this track last year, finishing 3rd and 4th, respectively. A top 5 finish this weekend looks like a pretty solid bet.

Martin Truex Jr.

As we mentioned at the top of this piece, the driver sitting at the top of the standings has yet to win a race. That driver would be Truex Jr., and while he may not have taken a checkered flag just yet, he has been incredibly consistent, landing in the top 10 in 5 of the first 7 races this season. In fact, he is currently on a streak of 5 straight races finishing in the top 10, but is that a trend that we can expect to see continue this weekend? Furthermore, can he do even better and get his first win of the year? He won this race in 2021 and finished 3rd last year, so at the very least, I think we can expect to see his top 10 streak continue.

Christopher Bell

With back-to-back trips to the Championship Round in the Cup Series, Christopher Bell has set the bar to a very high level for himself. The question now is whether he can continue to race at that level and give himself another shot at walking away as the Cup Series champion at the end of this season. His early form suggests that he is certainly in the mix to do so, as he currently sits 6th in the driver standings and appears to be getting better as the season progresses. After a 3rd at Daytona in the opening week, he had a pair of sub-par races, but a win at Phoenix sparked a run that has seen him land in the top 4 in each of the last 4 races. He was not great at Martinsville last season, so perhaps a top 10 wager might be the safe bet here.

Ryan Blaney

Winning a Cup Series Championship is tough but winning it in back-to-back seasons is about as close to an impossible task as it gets. Ryan Blaney closed out the 2023 season as the champion, but he is finding it very tough to reach the same heights this season. Truth be told, though, he is off to a very similar start to what we saw from him last year. He went 13 straight races without a win in 2023, and he actually only won 3 races all season long, so perhaps now is not the time to panic. For all of that. Blaney is still sitting in 5th in the driver standings, thanks in large part to finishing in the top 5 in 3 different races this season. Martinsville might well be the track where he makes that happen, as he won the penultimate race of last season on this track, finishing 7th in this corresponding race.

Kyle Larson

Since serving an almost full season suspension in 2020, Larson has returned to the Cup Series with a bang. He won the championship in his first season back in the fold before finishing 7th overall, a year later, once again proving how difficult it is to win it all in consecutive seasons. He returned to form in 2023, making it to the Championship Round, only to finish 2nd overall. The genera consensus is that he will be among the championship contenders again this season and his early season form seems to suggest that this might indeed be the case. Larson has one win under his belt this season and has been in the top 5 in 2 of the last 3 races. More importantly, though, he won this race in 2023, so I believe he is great value at these odds, and I would definitely play some money on him to win.

Joey Logano

After winning the Cup Series championship in 2022, Logano went into last year as one of the favorites to win it all again. In the end, Logano had a disappointing year, going out of the playoffs early and finishing 12th overall. Was that a sign that he is heading in the wrong direction, or can we expect a bounce back season in 2024? Right now, it is not looking very good, as Logano would not be in the playoffs if the season ended today. There is, though, a lot of racing still to come and he is coming off a 2nd place run in Richmond last weekend. He ran in the top 5 in both races in Martinsville last year, so he may do well again this Sunday.

2023 NASCAR Cook Out 400 Odds

The NASCAR schedule is set up in such a way that every now and again they will head to the same track more than once per season. That is what we are looking at this weekend, with the Cup Series heading to Richmond for the second time in the 2023 season. This is a regular thing for NASCAR at this specific location, which might well prove to be good for bettors, as we get to see how well specific drivers do at this track. That will also explain why the odds are the way they are heading into the weekend. You are probably going to find that the drivers at the top of the bookies board for this race are those who tend to do well at this track, so let’s take a closer look at the current NASCAR odds.

Martin Truex Jr.

NASCAR Betting Pick: +430

With time running out on the season, it is Truex Jr, who is sitting atop the driver standings. It is that, more than his performances at the Richmond track that has him in as the favorite this weekend. Truex Jr. has won 3 races this season in what has proven to be a bounce back year. While not old in the grand scheme of things, he is up there in years in terms of racing, and 2022 looked to be the end of the road for him. He has proved a lot of people wrong and will head into this weekend looking for his 4th win of the season Truex Jr. did not have a great run in Richmond earlier this season, so I might be looking elsewhere.

Denny Hamlin

NASCAR Betting Pick: +570

If we are looking at picking a driver based on nothing more than their past performances on a specific track, then you need to take a look at Hamlin and how he has done at Richmond. Besides having a solid pedigree on this track, Hamlin also holds the hot hand after winning at Pocono Raceway last weekend. That was his second win of the season, and while he did not have a great run in Richmond earlier this season, he had a 1st and 4th last season. All things combined; I think he is well worth taking a risk on this Sunday.

Kyle Larson

NASCAR Betting Pick: +580

It has been a bit of a strange season for Larson, perhaps because we are still measuring him against his stunning championship season in 2022. Matching what he did then was always going to be impossible, and while he is well off that pace, he is still very much in the championship hunt, sitting in 5th overall in the late stages of the regular season. He has a pair of wins in 2023, with one of those coming in Richmond in the early going. Can he repeat that showing and get another win this weekend?

Kevin Harvick

NASCAR Betting Pick: +770

This season will mark the end of the road for former Cup Series champion Harvick, who announced his decision to retire at the end of the current season back in January. The question now is whether he will go out with a bang or a whimper. At this point, he is not guaranteed a play off spot and needs a win to change that. He had a 1st and 2nd in Richmond last year, plus he finished 4th there earlier this season, so you cannot count him out this weekend.
