Over the past couple of seasons, a trip to Bristol at this stage of the season meant that we were all preparing for the unique spectacle that is a dirt race.

That has been set aside for now, as the Sunday race will be back on the concrete at Bristol. This is the 5th race in the NASCAR Cup Series season, and we already have a good battle going on at the top of the driver standings. As we have seen in the past, though, things can change quickly, with one driver or another suddenly getting hot after a slow start to the season. The bookies have their opinion on who they believe will win the Food City 500 on Sunday, so let’s take a look at some of the major players and their current NASCAR odds.
NASCAR Race Odds and Favorites to Win Food City 500
- Christopher Bell +550
- Denny Hamlin +575
- Ryan Blaney +1200
- William Byron +1200
- Chris Buescher +1300
- Ty Gibbs +1300
On the bright side of things, that finish was actually a first place run in Las Vegas. All told, he has massed enough points to be sitting in 2nd overall in the driver standings. Given his poor showing in this race last season, Larson is probably happy to be off the dirt and back on concrete, as his last 2 runs on this surface in Bristol saw him land in the top 5. With that in mind, he has to be seen as a threat this weekend.

Christopher Bell
At the top of this piece, we spoke about the possibility that drivers might get on a roll and start moving up the standings. Given how things have played out through the opening 4 races, Bell might just be that guy. He started the season well enough, finishing in 3rd in the Daytona 500, but that was followed by back-to-back poor showings in the next 2 races. He broke out of that in the biggest way possible by winning last weekend in Phoenix. Can he build on that and make it 2 in a row? In the last 2 races on concrete at Bristol, Bell finished in the top 5, so he is certainly one to watch this weekend.

Denny Hamlin
Four races into the new season, I think it’s fair to say that we have yet to see the best from Denny Hamlin. Through the first 2 races, Hamlin’s best finish was 19th, and while he did crack the top 10 in Race 3, he took another backward step last weekend in Phoenix, once again landing outside the top 10. This, though, might be the race where he snaps out of this early season funk and gets the job done. While dirt was not necessarily his friend on the Bristol track, concrete seems to be, as he finished first on this track in last season’s playoffs. That alone makes him well worth a look at these odds.

Ryan Blaney
It is never easy to head into the new season as the defending champion, but Blaney really seems to be handling it well. Things did not get off to the best start, with Blaney landing 30th in the Daytona 500, but he has recovered well from that, landing on the podium in the 3 races that followed. As far as Bristol goes, the track has been a bit of a mixed bag for Blaney over the years, so it’s tough to know what to expect from him this weekend. That said, his current form suggests that he is knocking on the door of his first win of the season, so why not this weekend?

William Byron
You can’t ask for a better start to the season than what Byron delivered, taking the checkered flag at the Daytona 500. The problem there, though, is that he set the bar high, making it tough for himself to get back to that point. He has not been terrible since that win, but he also only has one other top 10 finish in the last 3 races. Still, all of that is good enough to have him sitting 4th overall in the driver standings. Outside of the dirt races, he has 3 straight top 10 finishes on concrete at Bristol, so he might well be able to get back into the top 10 again this weekend. That’s the way I would go wagering on Byron this Sunday.

Chris Buescher
After 7 straight seasons of failing to really impress, Buescher took a big step forward in 2023, making it to the playoffs and going all the way to the Round of 8. He ended up settling for 7th overall, but it must still have felt like a win after so many years toiling in the middle of the pack. Buescher comes into this race on the heels of his best showing of the season, running 2nd in Phoenix last weekend. While he has not won a ton of races at this level, he did have 3 victories last season, so it is not out of the realm of possibility that he could take the checkered flag this weekend. He did win in Bristol, in 2022, while finishing 4th on the concrete last season. Do we have a live longshot here?

Ty Gibbs
You have to say that last season, which was the first full year in the Cup Series for Gibbs, was something of a learning experience. Gibbs failed to win a race or make the playoffs, but the reality is that it was probably more about gaining experience at this level than anything else. 4 races into the new year and things already looking better for Gibbs, who has delivered back-to-back top 5 finishes over the last 2 races. This is a driver with momentum on his side, but I would still be nervous about playing him to win, as top 5 or 10 seems more realistic.
